Present and past staff of the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology have pooled financial resources to bring sunshine to the lives of two individuals and to assist three entities. Under its Staff Charity Fund, Ajani Grazette, Blessing Taylor, the Nightingale Children's Home, the Irving Wilson School and the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness, collectively received $20,000 to help with expenses. CIMH Principal Dr. David Farrell has pledged additional support from the institute. Meanwhile, Senior Meteorologist Kathy-Ann Caesar is hoping the gesture and the 20 year old fund, will inspire other workplaces to mount similar programmes. With the re-emergence of infectious diseases like measles and leprosy globally, Barbados is maintaining its Enmore Infectious Disease Centre. Director of Clinical and Diagnostic Services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr. the Most Honourable Corey Forde says the facility is active, although the Harrison Point Isolation Centre is no longer operational. He says Enmore is being used to isolate people. Young Barbadian males are being urged to get into business. The encouragement comes from Acting Manager of the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme Ryan Moseley. He was speaking on the sidelines of the Market Ready Workshop at the Radisson Resort - a hands-on exercise convened to raise the skills of young entrepreneurs, particularly their ability to close a sale. Mr. Moseley told the Business Report workshops and youth cities will be set up across the island in an attempt to reach everyone. He says they are looking to create a balance across the sexes. Concerns have been raised by residents of northern Barbados pertaining to the recently installed traffic lights on Highway 2A at the Royal Westmoreland junction and the daily back up of traffic along that route. Government officials experienced it first hand en route to the Parish Speaks in St. Lucy. Resident, Carlos Bignall says the situation has gotten worse promoting a response from the Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley who suggests officials may have to do a review. A drug awareness policy is on the cards at one of Barbados' leading hotels. The revelation came from Substance Abuse Prevention Officer with the National Council on Substance Abuse, Wendy Greenidge during a day-long hands on session at the Accra Beach Hotel. Ms. Greenidge says it part of the activities of Drug Awareness Month. She says the exercises were an eye-opener for all participants who attended the sessions. Meanwhile, Accra Beach Hotel and Spa's Group Human Resources Manager Tricia Joseph says it was a learning experience and an important initiative for staff of the hotel. High optimism the Wildey Green Business pilot being undertaken by the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry could be replicated in other business districts. The project is funded by the International Labour Office Partnership for Action on Green Economy with support from the Ministry of Environment, National Beautification and the Blue and Green Economy. Officials of the ILO and the BCCI signed off on the project during a ceremony this morning. Among the project's objectives, are assessing the greening and associated needs among businesses in the Wildey business district and securing the commitment of 20 businesses to transition to best practice 'green businesses' by the end of the project. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Yolande Howard welcomed the partnership saying the project came about after much discussion and work over the years. Director of the International Labour Organisation's decent work team and office for the Caribbean, Joni Musabayana says it's important businesses are enabled to green their business processes and services. The Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) is stepping up its efforts to rehabilitate Barbados’ road infrastructure. During a media site visit at work which started yesterday at Arthur Seat, St Thomas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Works Santia Bradshaw outlined the ongoing and soon-to- start projects, adding the aim was to capitalise on the dry season. Bradshaw also said work on Crab Hill to Archers Bay, St Lucy had begun. In addition, she said work from Shop Hill to Content as well as in Proute, all in St Thomas, was set to begin soon. However, those roads fall under the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) project. MP for St. Thomas Cynthia Forde said she is elated work has started in Arthur Seat. Solidarity House came alive earlier today. Scores of fourth and fifth-form students from local private and public secondary schools took the mic to share solutions to curb the use of illegal drugs on the island. They were participants in the inaugural Voices of the Youth Speech Contest organised by the National Council of Substance Abuse. Counsellor Mosiah Hoyte lauded the teens for their ideas as he outlined some of the benefits of the competition. The six liturgical seasons of the Christian calendar will be the focus of the second Anglican Diocese Flotilla Parade and Rally. 'Great surprise'... that's how the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners has reacted to the announcement in the press made by the Chief Operating Officer of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Mrs. Christine Greenidge said that there will be a change in the terms and conditions of work of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital consultants. In a statement to the media BAMP, the trade union representing the majority of doctors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital said this announcement was made unilaterally, without any prior consultation with them as a trade union. The BAMP president says the issues relate to bed management, shortages of supplies, lack of nursing staff and other staff, unavailability of lab tests and lack of access to x-ray reports, along with other administrative issues. A large-scale wind farm, expected to be running within three years, is up for private sector investment, a part of Government's push for Barbados to be using energy mainly from clean sources within the next six years. The wind farm, to be located at Lamberts in St. Lucy, is to produce between 30 to 50 megawatts of power. The International Finance Corporation is leading the process of selecting an investor for the public-private partnership or PPP that needs approximately 80 million dollars funding. Alfonso Garcia Mora, Vice President of the International Finance Corporation with responsibility for Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean has told CBC News in an exclusive, Barbados is ripe for investment. Mr. Garcia Mora notes the cost of electricity to consumers, with the inclusion of this renewable energy source into the island's energy mix, would be competitive. The regional Vice President with the private sector arm of the World Bank says the investment will be chosen through bids.
