Andrea Franklin has been announced as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. The announcement was made at a press conference late this afternoon. Tourism Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill, flanked by the Chairman Shelly Williams, explained how the new CEO was chosen. The Minister says Ms. Franklin brings 20 years of experience in the tourism industry to the job and is qualified in tourism management and project management. She worked with the Barbados Tourism Authority as Manager, Product Integration from May 2007 to April 2010, as well as with Air Jamaica. He says along with marketing experience in a private sector environment she also transitioned a state-owned enterprise into a successful private-public partnership arrangement, namely the Caves of Barbados where she was the CEO. Her appointment is effective from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2027. Mr. Gooding-Edhill says the Board of Directors has also agreed that the new CEO will be supported by a Chief Operations Officer. Cheryl Carter will be appointed to that post. She will manage the operational functions of the organisation in order to facilitate the streamlining of skills and core functions so the CEO can focus on the strategic direction of the entity. The 2024 Barbados Sailing Week which concluded over the weekend has been lauded as a success. With coastal racing, kite surfing and wing foiling along with the culminating Mount Gay Round Barbados Regatta, those who were victorious were rewarded in a ceremony at the Barbados Yacht Club. By this July, motorists and other road users should see major improvements to the road network across the island. The private sector is again facing calls to play its part as it benefits from the reduced cost of doing business. Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey, says such players who are not passing on these benefits are doing an injustice to citizens and the country. Barbados and CARICOM are upbeat about the region hosting the upcoming 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States. That meeting will be held in Antigua and Barbuda come May 27-30. Back in 1994, Barbados hosted the first global conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Francois Jackman says the Barbados programme of action - the first of its kind adopted back then addressed the vulnerabilities of SIDS. He says the path must be charted towards the resilient prosperity of SIDS. Ambassador Jackman's comments came during the first session of the preparatory committee of the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Crochet is not only being used to empower handcraft personnel in the region but educate Barbadians on environmental issues. Through her, Crochet for a Cause: Ridge to Reef Project, Nikisha Toppin is putting the spotlight on issues impacting the Caribbean through pieces depicting fish and coral. The project is being supported by the Global Environment Facility, GEF Small Grants Programme implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. Ms. Toppin who is the founder of Elaine's Caribbean Crochet says they've been able to introduce several workshops and seminars as part of its empowerment drive. If all goes according to plan, Barbadians and other Caribbean nationals will have a private ferry service by year end to travel to select regional countries. The tentative timeline for the Connect Caribe Ferry, which is being operated by the Pleion Group, was announced by its Chairman and CEO, Ambassador Dr. Andre Thomas. It is a separate 50 million-plus US dollar venture that was announced recently by three Caribbean prime ministers. Over 270 people are expected to find jobs in the first phase of the project. Ambassador Thomas notes the number will increase as the different aspects are rolled out. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has explained the decision to remove Neil Rowe as Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly. In a statement after today's session of the House she described it as one of the most difficult decisions in her 32 years in Parliament. She says given Mr. Rowe has a matter before the court and has now been indicted, they feel it's best he be allowed time to deal with his private matter. The Prime Minister also notes Mr. Rowe remains the Member of Parliament for St. Michael North West. More women appear to be heeding the call to get checked for breast cancer. The result has been a growing waitlist for mammograms at the Breast Screening Programme of the Barbados Cancer Society. The revelation was made by Medical Coordinator, Dr. Shirley Jhagroo. Dr. Jhagroo was speaking as CIBC First Caribbean International Bank presented the programme with a cheque for $200,000, the proceeds of last year's fundraising efforts. The bank's Managing Director, Donna Wellington, said they included the popular Walk For the Cure, a coin drive for customers and a highly successful online banking option for donors. The funds will be used to upgrade the programme's 20 year old PACS system, which is where medical images are stored. The installation, which should be done in the next two months, will be done at a cost of US $250,000, payable over a period of three years. It's official - St. Michael North West MP, Neil Rowe has been stripped of his post as Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly. The development unfolded during this afternoon's sitting of the House. Leader of Government Business and Deputy Prime Minister, Santia Bradshaw wrote to House Speaker, His Honour Arthur Holder, requesting the action be taken. The Deputy Prime Minister then proposed Parliamentary Representative for St. Thomas, Cynthia Forde, for the role and the MPs in the Chamber voted in favour.
