The Barbados Workers Union will be seeking a meeting with the management of the newly formed sugar companies, the outcome of which could determine whether this year's sugar harvest starts on time. Deputy General Secretary of the BWU, Dwaine Paul, made the revelation following a meeting with sugar workers yesterday. The workers, who were previously employed under the now defunct Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC), were hired under two privately owned companies the Agricultural Business Company (ABC Ltd.), and the Barbados Energy and Sugar Company (BESCO Ltd.). Mr. Paul outlined some of the workers' concerns, which include contracts which do not speak to the full terms and conditions expected on their re-engagement. While there's been no official announcement of the start date for this year's harvest, Mr. Paul is hopeful the requested meeting can be held in the coming days. He notes the start will be dependent on getting the matters resolved.
