Efforts are on to get more young people involved in sheep farming locally. Today, the Barbados Agricultural Society and the Barbados Sheep Farmers Association joined forces to mount a training seminar for scores of young people at the Grotto. President of the Sheep Farmers Association Rommel Parris spoke about the venture and the areas that will be covered. He is also on a mission to boost the numbers in the association. One lucky Courts customer has taken the grand prize of a $100,000 home makeover in the company's Christmas promotion. Speaking during the presentation ceremony at the store's City location, Managing Director of Unicomer (Barbados), which trades as Courts, Trisha Tannis says they are always pleased to be able to give back to customers who have remained loyal over the years. She says Unicomer continues to play a pivotal role in the transformation of the country as a society and economy. Meanwhile, it was all smiles for grand prize winner Coraleen Boyce. Part of her $100,000 makeover grand prize includes $20,000 in cash. She thanked God for the unexpected blessing, adding that it took some convincing at first for her to believe she was one of the finalists. Several other Courts customers also won big under the company's Servitech, Courts Optical, Ready Cash, and Courts Card departments, to name a few. They won a mixture of prizes, ranging from cash and televisions and large and small appliances, to staycations and more. A name change and extensive upgrades are on the cards for the Cheapside terminal in the City. Transport Authority officials, including its Chairman, Marie Theodore met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Works, Santia Bradshaw and and top MTW officials to review preliminary plans for what will be the new Seaview Terminal. The Barbados Police Service was also privy to a first-hand look at the plans and had the opportunity to advise on security regarding the proposed terminal. Minister Bradshaw says discussions had been ongoing for several years regarding the upgrade to the facility. A Methodist reverend has called attention to what has been described as spirit of indiscipline which he says has crept into every area of community life due to the disconnect of churches from Caribbean societies. This was raised during a meeting of church leaders and officials who are in Barbados for the 198th District Conference of the Southern Caribbean. Business opportunities abound in the medicinal cannabis industry. The observation was made by Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences Dr. Damian Cohall at the presentation of a Research and Development Licence to the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies from the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority. He says the industry is projected to make US 50 billion dollars this year. Dr. Cohall says the initiative holds wealth and health opportunities in the industry and it has the ability to move gross domestic product upwards. Mindful of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Government will be conducting research this year to gauge the true scope of poverty in the country. Minister of People Empowerment Kirk Humphrey shared the plans for the Enhanced Country Poverty Assessment during this morning's post Cabinet press briefing. He says best practice indicates poverty statistics should be updated every two years, but Barbados' most recent stats were acquired in 2016 when 17.2% of households fell below the poverty line. This year's study will be done in conjunction with regional and international agencies. The People Empowerment Minister also disclosed the results will help to shape policy decisions. The Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies has been issued the first medicinal cannabis licence for research and development in Barbados. The revelation was made by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security Terry Bascombe at a presentation ceremony held by the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority at the 3W's Oval today. Barbadians will soon have a dedicated hotline they can use to vent about service delivery at state entities among other things. It is the Citizen Services Contact Centre (CSCC) and it will be rolled out from next week. Minister in the Prime Minister's Office with responsibility for Culture Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight says the venture will employ between 50 to 60 people and will be managed by external service provider Trident. The venture, which will initially run for six months, will have a cost of 10 thousand dollars a month. Senator Munro-Knight has given the assurance that the call centre team will be as responsive as possible. Government intends to press ahead with plans to upgrade its fleet of vehicles to electric models this year. The latest one to be changed will be the Prime Minister's vehicle, M50. Dairy farmers in Barbados are hoping more cows can be imported this year. President of the Barbados Dairy and Beef Association Annette Beckett says Government is expected to help, as it can be a costly undertaking. According to her it could cost between six to seven thousand barbados dollars to import one cow. However, with the sector recording a fall-off in milk production last year, she explains why new cows are needed. Ms. Beckett also explains why they are looking to import cows instead of rearing them locally. Despite the naysayers, Special Envoy to the Prime Minister's Office on Reparations and Economic Enfranchisement, Trevor Prescod says countries are pressing on with their case for reparations and continue their education campaigns enlightening Barbadian and Caribbean nationals of their history. Mr. Prescod told the Mornin' Barbados the Caribbean Reparations Commission is active with some 15 units across the region with assistance from various non-governmental organisations. Partnerships have also been forged with like-minded advocacy groups internationally and on the African continent. Mr. Prescod acknowledged recent gestures where individuals have made donations along with universities and apologies extended on behalf of descendants of some former slave-owning families. He says the advocacy continues regarding the Drax Hall Plantation where a British M.P. is facing demands to pay Barbados for harm caused by slavery at an estate he inherited in the country. Belize's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francis Fonseca, says the country is not yet ready to reinstate diplomatic ties with Israel. The CARICOM state in November of last year suspended ties with Israel due to its indiscriminate bombing of the Gaza Strip. It had also recalled its ambassador and retracted its request for accreditation for its Honorary Consul in Tel Aviv. Church groups have been pressing the Belizean government to rethink its position. However, Minister Fonseca says the nation simply isn't there yet.

The importance of young people telling their story through film has been underscored by a British director. Joan Hillery, the Director of the feature length film 'That Great British Documentary' is on island for the Barbados International Film Festival. CBC News spoke with her on the opening night of the festival. It was a special night for Keya Bartlett, the 2022 recipient of last year's Collaboration Film Grant. With the grant, she was able to co-direct a film 'When Kites Fly', which premiered at the festival.
