The Ryan Brathwaite Track at the Usain Sports Complex will be ready in time for this year's Chefette Frosteez National Primary Schools Athletic Championship. The 2024 track and field season is already in swing and some schools have held their inter-house athletic meets at various grounds around the island. However, this morning during the launch of NAPSAC 2024, the assurance was given that a new Ryan Brathwaite Track will be laid in time for the event. CBC's Anmar Goodridge-Boyce reports. Smoke from the incinerator at the Grantley Adams International Airport forced the early closure of a St. Bartholomew Primary School. Now the airport's management and education officials are working to resolve the environmental issue. Joining us this evening to provide some details as to exactly what happened is First Vice President of the Barbados Union of Teachers Julian Pierre, who is also the head of the union's health and safety committee. GAIA's Corporate Communications Specialist Charlene Browne says they are taking the concerns expressed very seriously. She says GAIA wants to comprehensively address the issues. The Ministry of Education is also involved in seeking a solution to the problem. Communications Consultant Gaynelle Marshall says a representative from the Ministry visited the school today to collate information on the ongoing issue.

Barbadians can expect to benefit from improvements at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, particularly its Accident and Emergency Department. It comes as phase three of that department is now operational while the second phase is being upgraded. We get the details from our Reanne Phillips. Dr. Coralita Babb-Schaefer is ready to take on her new role as Master of the High Court. She took the oath of office this morning in the presence of President of Barbados, the Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason at State House. The Supreme Court of Judicature Act, Cap. 117A was amended in 2006 to make provision for a Master of the High Court. The Master has the power and authority of a judge sitting in Chambers. These include the power to grant an injunction. Attorney-at-law Roger Barker recently took the oaths before the acting President, the Very Reverend Dr. Jeffrey Gibson, at State House. Dr. Babb-Schaefer says she is excited to serve Barbados. Acting Chief Justice Francis Belle expects Babb-Schaefer will give of her best to assist in addressing the backlog. This is from President of the Barbados Credit Union Leagues Limited of Barbados Limited, Kemar Cumberbatch. He made the disclosure after signing a memorandum of understanding between the Ghanaian Cooperative Credit Unions Association Limited and Credit Union Leagues of Barbados Limited yesterday. The president outlined some of the areas covered in the document. The MOU is a far-reaching document and the president said agriculture stands to benefit in the long run. The crime reduction fight will continue in earnest as the Minister Responsible for Crime Prevention Corey Lane, says they will be stepping up programmes so that last year's gains are sustained. Apparently baffled by how some accidents actually occur after analysis, the Barbados Road Safety Association (BRSA) has laid blame on a lack of attention by motorists. It says drivers are either paying attention to their cellular phones or generally not concentrating on driving. Public Relations Office Erskine Cumberbatch says the practice is evident daily, especially when traffic is slow. Mr. Cumberbatch was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. The road safety association has been working in partnership with other entities, including the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation and Cooperators General Insurance Limited to push the message of road safety. BRSA's President Roland Lowe shared concern about the practice of allowing children to stand in vehicles. As Barbados ramps up its fight against dengue fever, health officials have not only intensified their surveillance but have repeated calls on citizens and homeowners to adhere to legislation as enforcement has also been stepped up. Deputy Chief Environmental Health Officer Ronald Chapman says the matter is being take seriously given recent increases in dengue cases. Mr. Chapman was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Report. Amid concerns about the increasing rodent population on island, Mr. Chapman suggests some Barbadians no longer take pride in keeping the island clean. Added exposure for Barbados in the African continent as the country was promoted by its High Commissioner to Kenya Alexander McDonald on Kenyan Airways. In an interview on Capital 98.4FM's Fuse Programme, he encouraged Kenyans to consider a trip to the island as he pointed out similarities between the people of both nations. His message to Kenyans was that Barbados welcomes them. He used the opportunity to promote the island's people, culture and cuisine, among other areas. The Lawyer for a man accusing police of physical abuse while in custody is calling on the Barbados Police Service to release footage from videocams the officers were wearing so the full facts can be known. Attorney Shadia Simpson made the call yesterday as 30-year-old Leaon Freeman, the man who was seen on a viral video being threatened and abused by a female police officer, claimed she was not the only cop who assaulted him. The process of selecting secondary schools for candidates of the Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination should be based on consultation with the students and their families. That was the advice shared by Education Officer Shamin Ally, at yesterday's town hall on the 11+ Examination. Speaking to a packed room of parents and guardians at Bay Primary, she encouraged them to allow their children to have a say before filling out the form. And Ms. Ally has implored the parents and guardians to complete the school selection forms as early as possible to meet the deadline.
