Even as Barbados and other regional territories are being lauded for their ongoing efforts to reform their education systems, authorities have been urged to include the youth in the process. The call and suggestion have come from Director of the School of Education at the UWI Cavehill Campus Professor Joel Warrican. He made that call this morning during the Meeting of the Eastern Caribbean Joint Board of Teacher Education. Professor Warrican also contends the social ills present in Barbados and the region are manifestations of the failures of the education systems that are still based on the colonial era. The appointment of two Spiritual Advisors for the Cabinet of Barbados has been applauded by a Switzerland-based religious leader. During her address to the nation earlier this month, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said the Reverends Dr. Joel Cumberbatch and Dr. Adrian Smith would serve in this capacity. At the time she suggested there was a need to strengthen moral and religious leadership, as well as build new partnerships with the church to address social challenges. Reverend Dr. Mikie Roberts is the Programme Executive for Spiritual Life, Faith and Order with the World Council of Churches. He has applauded the move by the Prime Minister, which he believes will help members of Cabinet balance their private and public lives. The Division of Fisheries is undertaking a major re-marking exercise to bring commercial fishing vessels in line with international standards. Chief Fisheries Officer, Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox, says the process is now underway, and will see fishing boats bearing new registration numbers. Dr. Cox explained it is a mandatory exercise and they received assistance from larger vessel owners to test the new process. It will also allow them to know which boats are actively working. Given the number of boats on island, the process is not an overnight one. But the Fisheries Chief made it clear if individuals are not due inspection but want their vessels registered under the new system, they can go to the temporary satellite office at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex. West Indies Captain Kraigg Brathwaite wants his side to play more test matches, saying that more red-ball matches for the team will lead to an overall improvement of the players. The Caribbean side is set to face Australia for a two-match test series starting tonight, and the skipper has travelled to Adelaide with some new names in the squad, after senior members like Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers opted out, to focus on the upcoming T20 World Cup. The West Indies Cricket team has had very little test involvement in the recent past, with only 13 matches during the 2023-2025 World Test Championship window. Their six-match series in the World Test Championship cycle comprises only one three-match series, which came against England in July, 2023.
