The National Council on Substance Abuse (NCSA) is still concerned about the use of synthetic drugs in the country and is appealing to Barbadians to report any suspected usage which could have deadly consequences. Deputy manager Troy Wickham made that plea when the NCSA embarked on a community drive thru as part of Drug Awareness Month activities. The Barbados film industry is making waves internationally and the international community also want to be a part of the local industry. This year marks the eighth instalment of the festival with entries from around the globe. Development initiatives are taking shape in the Barbados Film and Television Association. President of that body Jamal Slocombe tells the Business Report they have been working on key areas aimed at bolstering the industry. The film association head says they are buoyed by the incentives offered by the Prime Minister in her budget of last year and gave some insights of what the organisation has planned. This island's top netballers will be playing for cash in 2024. The Barbados Netball Association is launching a premier division to replace the Division One Competition with the top four finishers set to earn prize money. The announcement comes a few months before the start of the 2024 season on March 16, at the Wildey Gymnasium. Damien Best reports. Gaza are once again the National Peace Programme One Love Out of Season Football Champions, after clinching their second title last night. Playing at the Barbados Lumber Company grounds, Gaza comfortably defeated Blue Hill Ballers 3-1 to lift the title and a cash prize of $10,000. CBC's Ann Marie Burke reports. Parents have been called upon to treat the day of the Common Entrance Exam as a normal school day. Education Officer in the Minister of Education, Technology and Vocational Training, Donna Roberts, also wants them not to put undue pressure on the students. She was speaking during a town hall meeting at the Alexander School, for parents of children preparing for this year's Common Entrance Exam. She told the gathering the examination will take place on Tuesday, May 7, and will consist of three papers; an essay paper which will be for thirty minutes duration, an English paper which would be for one hour and twenty minutes and a maths paper of one hour and fifteen minutes. The Education Officer said every child is guaranteed a place in a government secondary school and urged parents not to place pressure on their children on the day. The Barbados Road Safety Association is advocating for the creation of a multi-stakeholder group to address issues in the sector. BRSA's President Roland Lowe, says it will be one of the main priorities for the group this year. Mr. Lowe is also concerned that some drivers appear to not understand the rules of the road. He believes reminders of these rules could help.
Extreme weather was among the factors which contributed to a decline in milk production in 2023. That's according to President of the Barbados Dairy and Beef Association, Annette Beckett. She says as a result, the quantity of milk was less than that produced in 2022. Ms. Beckett was speaking during an interview with CBC News. She confirms she has seen cost savings since the installation of solar panels on her farm, but reveals such technologies are not widespread in the industry, because of a lack of finances. Roadworks began at Crab Hill to Archers Bay, St Lucy today, under the Accelerated Mill and Pave Programme. The Ministry of Transport and Works is removing the existing asphalt and will then follow up by paving. Signage and traffic wardens will be in place during daily work from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., while traffic will be diverted through Crab Hill No.2 and Crab Hill to Animal Flower Cave. Infra Construction Inc. is carrying out the work. Private owners of public transport vehicles have embarked on a project aimed at reducing fossil fuel emissions. Kelvin Scott spoke about the Transport Energy Project, an initiative of the Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT), on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. He says the considerations include the use of CNG or compressed natural gas. Mr. Scott says while the initial investment to transition vehicles to electric or compressed natural gas may be high, the benefits will be seen in the long run. 55 young professionals gained invaluable working experiences over the Christmas holidays thanks to Montrose Holdings. Students were from the University of the West Indies, Barbados Community College, the Gene and Norma Hospitality Institute, and the Samuel Jackman Institute of Technology. There were also participants from the Barbados Youth Advance Corp and TopShelf Bartending Academy The internship was spread between organisations such as the Ocean 2 Hotel and Chickmont Foods Limited. Chief Executive Officer of the O2 Hotel Patricia Affonso-Dass, thanked the interns for their hard work and commitment during the ceremony.

Court marshals have powers of arrest, with or without a warrant. The revelation was made by the Acting Senior Marshal, Mareta Hoyte as she addressed the 45th-Anniversary Service of the Court Process Office at the White Park Wesleyan Holiness Church today. In a wide-ranging speech, she told the congregation, made up of Attorney General Dale Marshall, his Permanent Secretary and other members of the judiciary, that court marshals have far-reaching powers. People are being urged to take steps to minimise the possibility of being slipped the party drug Rohypnol. The advice from the Substance Abuse Prevention Officer with the National Council on Substance Abuse, Makeda Bourne. She says when added to a liquid, Rohypnol, commonly referred to as the "date rape drug", does not alter the way it looks, smells or tastes. Ms bourne therefore urges people to pay close attention and keep their drinks covered in social settings. The Substance Abuse Prevention Officer was a guest on Q100.7 FM's “Let's Talk About It” radio programme, where she encouraged people who believe they've been given Rohypnol to seek medical attention. Tension is ratcheting up between the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) and the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA). This time over an advertisement in one of the dailies. The BWU is questioning the motive behind the advert. The paid ad outlines the BHTA's support of tourism's recovery, pointing out that one in every ten people in barbados is employed directly in tourism. General Secretary Toni Moore says the Union is shocked by the move, especially given the distance that has been covered through dialogue which commenced 18 weeks ago under the chairmanship of the Ministers of Labour and Tourism.
It was a case of being in the right place at the right time for two employees of The Tavern Pub in Bagatelle, St Thomas. Forty-two-year-old Sheena Boyce was ready to deliver her twin babies while on her way to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, but time was not on her side when her water broke. She therefore had to pull into The Tavern Pub in Bagatelle, St Thomas on advice from paramedics talking to her on the telephone. Two employees, supervisor Tanesha White and cook Tonia Howell, jumped in to assist Carolyn Scantlebury and her daughter Alliah Richards who were transporting Boyce to the hospital.
