The excessive rain has been depleting crops for some farmers. Reports indicate there is a shortage of sweet potatoes which will drive the price up to six dollars per pound, as well as okras, butternut squash, eggplant, cucumbers and carrots to name a few. However, Vice president of the Barbados Association of Retailers, Vendors and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN) local farmers can produce underground crops that will hold their own with the weather. And he suggests they plant bananas, plantains and some fruit trees to cushion the impact of the shortage of imports. Mr. Forde, who farms in St. Lucy, says while greenhouses and aquaponics systems are a solution, many farmers do not have the financial backing to start. He says already farmers have to contend with high water prices. And he is calling on Government for help in this regard. People have been presenting to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with drug-resistant forms of bacteria. The stark revelation from the Director of Clinical and Diagnostic Services, Dr. the Most Honourable Corey Forde. He was a guest on Mornin' Barbados as the hospital observes World Antimicrobial Resistance Week. Antimicrobial resistance or AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to medicines such as antibiotics. The misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in humans, animals and plants are the main drivers in the development of drug-resistant pathogens. Researchers forecast South Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean will have the highest AMR mortality rates by 2050. Dr. Forde warns the impact on Barbados would be particularly severe, because of the country's ageing population and the high prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases. The activities for AMR Week include Go Blue Friday, where members of the public will be encouraged to turn in any unused or expired antimicrobials, for safe disposal. A regional leader is looking at the revolutionary Bridgetown Initiative conceived by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley as a gateway to revolutionise how his country and other small island developing states access international financing.  That is the view of Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who is adamant that Caribbean countries are not looking for handouts but rather fair access to the international financial architecture.
