Life’s still a beach in Barbados. The winter tourist season is still a high point for Barbados as many visitors trade in their white Christmas for a holiday of sun, sand and clear waters. The first week of 2024 is a clear example why this island in the sun remains a top choice for international visitors. Last week, Accra Beach in Worthing, Christ Church, and Pebbles Beach on Bay Street, St Michael, were buzzing with many of those visitors who could be seen splashing in the water and lounging in their beach chairs. West Indies are about to begin a three-day warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI in Adelaide, starting in a few minutes time. Windies Head Coach Andre Coley says the team has settled nicely and will be aiming for good performances. While the tour match is not an official first-class fixture, which means both teams can rotate more than 11 players through their line-ups, it will provide vital experience for the visitors. Skipper Kriagg Brathwaite is one of only five members of the 15-player group returning to Australia, along with veteran pacer Kemar Roach, fellow fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, wicketkeeper Joshua Dasilva, and opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul. Coley says their approach will be to execute the game plans as best as possible. This is the only warm-up match ahead of the first test which starts January 16. West Indies' last test victory in Australia came at the WACA ground in Perth 27 years ago, while their most recent win away from home came against Bangladesh at Dhaka in February 2021. Barbados Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong is endorsing a suggestion for countries to consider putting some of their agricultural production outside of the hurricane belt. The idea was pushed by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, given the vulnerability of Barbados and other islands in the Caribbean, to storms and hurricanes. Ambassador Comissiong says the idea proposes the utilisation of lands in countries like mainland member states of CARICOM or even Venezuela. Ambassador Comissiong remains upbeat about the 25 by 2025 initiative aimed at reducing extra-regional agri-food imports by 25% by the year 2025. He says the programme is going well.
