Sales of hybrids have been increasing and are almost on par with that of gas-powered vehicles, at one of the island's leading car dealerships. Director of Sales at NASSCO Limited Roger Moore says this changing dynamic is in keeping with Barbados' efforts to transition to clean energy and achieve net zero by the year 2035. He made the comment while talking to the business report about the new Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid available from the company. Mr. Moore says the duty-free concession introduced by Government for the purchase of vehicles powered by renewable energy, is helping to fuel their sales. A decision is to be made today on whether students of the Luther Thorne Memorial Primary and Ann Hill schools will be returning to classrooms there come next week. According to General Secretary of the Barbados Union of Teachers, Herbert Gittens, it hinges on the findings of a walkthrough of the institutions in the morning, with education officials. Teachers at both schools staged protests last term, over what they deemed unsafe and unhealthy conditions. The Ministry of Education commenced remedial work at both compounds, which continues over the ongoing Christmas break. Mr. Gittens says following a meeting with education officials, it was decided a tour to get a firsthand look at the progress of those works, would be best. The union is calling for continued monitoring and maintenance of school compounds, as Mr. Gittens notes there are ongoing concerns relating to the Lester Vaughan and Lawrence T. Gay Memorial schools. The number of Barbadians who have registered to acquire their new national identification card is gradually nearing the quarter million mark. That's according to the most recent information given to CBC News today by Manager of Information Systems with the Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Kenroy Roach, as an increasing number of Barbadians continue to come in to get their cards, ahead of the revised deadline of January 31 this year. He says up to earlier today, the number of total registrations had reached 236,100. Of that number, he said 197,068 cards had been delivered up to earlier today but that figure is expected to increase. Mr. Roach says when compared to the global average for national registrations such as these, the current numbers are above that average and very positive. He says most countries undertaking a project of this magnitude don't usually see a 60% completion rate within a year or two, as most countries will usually only see such uptake over a three to five-year period. He says that based on the fact the process was officially started here in June 2022, the current registration figures speak for themselves. He adds, based on their current projections, they could get very close to the 250,000 mark by the end of the month. Barbados along with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are being challenged to boost growth to reduce poverty and achieve progress on the sustainable development goals. The challenge came following the release of the UN World Economic Situation and Prospects 2024 which projects growth to decelerate sharply in Latin America and the Caribbean. The flagship economic report also points to a slowing of global economic growth from an estimated 2.7% in 2023 to 2.4% in 2024, trending below the pre-pandemic growth rate of 3.0%. It states amid a deteriorating economic outlook, high borrowing costs and the slowdown in the United States and China, the labour market outlook in the region will remain challenging this year. Director of the economic analysis and policy division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Shantanu Mukherjee notes while they are not expecting a recession, volatility remains. Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division Hamid Rashid warned of significant challenges for developing countries should they face another shock given their debt risk.
