The Barbados Association of Retired Persons, BARP will this year be assisting Barbadians in planning for retirement. The target age is for Barbadians in their forties. The announcement was made by BARP President, Marilyn Rice-Bowen on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. While noting 2023 was a hectic year, Mrs Rice-Bowen says several notable successes have been achieved through which older Barbadians will benefit. The Settlers remains top of the points table in the BIM 10 Tournament after registering their 4th win today at the Desmond Haynes Oval. Winning the toss and batting, the Warriors were held to 96-7 off their 10 overs with Dario Cumberbatch and Chaim Holder taking two wickets apiece. In reply, the Settlers sped to 97-3 in 7.2 overs. Kevin Stoute led with 44 and Kadeem Alleyne an unbeaten 25 as the Settlers move to eight points and the Warriors slip to their 4th defeat. Damien Best has the details. A stalwart of the local and regional teaching fraternity was laid to rest today. It was Graydon Sealy, first principal of the Garrison Secondary School and during a service of thanksgiving at the Abundant Life Assembly today he was eulogised by old scholar and Senior counsel Michael Lashley described him as an outstanding citizen of the soil Trevor Thorpe reports. A giant among the teaching fraternity, a principal par excellence, a legend and an outstanding Barbadian. Those were some of the superlatives used by old scholar and Senior Counsel Michael Lashley to describe late principal of the Garrison Secondary School, Graydon Sealy. In his tribute to the late principal of the school that now bears his name Mr. Lashley said Mr. Sealy charted a course, not only for the young school but was also responsible for shaping the lives of all those with whom he came into contact. The old scholar in recalling the stewardship of the late principal told the audience that dedication, hard work and discipline is now evident in every sphere of Barbadian life. Banks Holdings Limited is expecting a rise in customers following a celebrity endorsement by DJ Khaled. The American deejay and music producer has been vacationing on the island with his family. In a 56-second video posted to his Instagram account which has 37.8 million followers, DJ Khaled is seen taking a sip of what appears to be an ice-cold Banks Beer, while walking along a beach. The video posted a day ago has already garnered more than 22 thousand likes. Commercial Manager of Banks Holdings Limited, Khadija Marshall, says while the endorsement was unexpected, it is certainly appreciated. DJ Khaled has also posted videos enjoying meals at Chefette, The Cliff restaurant and even enjoying a mango with local youth at the beach. Bail in the sum of $75,000 with one surety has been granted to Tonneil Neshan Rashida Rowe today in connection with a number of charges related to 30.45 kilograms of cannabis. Illegal drugs are valued at two hundred and forty-three thousand, six hundred ($243,600.00) barbados dollars. the 21-year-old of Kew Road, Tudor Bridge, Saint Michael, was arrested and formally charged by the Narcotics Division of the Barbados Police Service. The charges include possession of cannabis, trafficking cannabis, intent to supply cannabis and importation of cannabis at the Grantley Adams International Airport. The young woman, who is the daughter of MP for St Michael North West Neil Rowe, was also charged with money laundering related to ten thousand, five hundred and ninety-nine dollars and twenty-two cents ($10,599.22) barbados currency. Ms. Rowe appeared before Magistrate Ward-Sargeant in the District 'B' Magistrate's Court. Her attorney Michael Lashley KC, spoke with CBC News. The usual hustle and bustle of pedestrian and vehicular traffic through the junction of Tudor Street and Swan Street in The City came to a screeching halt this morning. That's because a report was made about a suspected gas leak in the area. As a result police and fire officials cordoned off the area, as officials from the National Petroleum Corporation (NPC) carried out their investigations. Pedestrians and motorists therefore had to seek alternate routes to get to their respective destinations, while some businesses in the area were directly affected by the cordoned area. Acting General Manager Ian Bradshaw gave CBC News an update. Mr. Bradshaw adds that the NPC will continue to monitor the situation and carry out checks. Meanwhile, Fire Officer Shaniqua Charles said they responded to the scene under the direction of leading fire officer Clarke. The doors to a tissue culture laboratory will open in Barbados this month. Word of this came from Minister of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security Indar Weir as he laid out his Ministry's plans for the agriculture sector this year. He said the food terminal, the privatised sugar industry and the project care initiative will make up the programme for the industry this year. Trevor Thorpe reports.
