Family, along with former students and colleagues, turned out in their numbers to pay their respects to late educator this afternoon. Mr. Sealy, who became the first principal of the then Garrison Secondary School when it opened in 1975, died last month at the age of 94. Today, his body lay in repose at the school which was renamed in his honour in 2012. Harold Ruck, who taught at the school under Mr. Sealy's leadership, says many students went on to excel because they were given a place at the institution. A number of former students also spoke highly of the late principal. The Autism Association of Barbados has one New Year's wish and that is to finally have a home to offer recreational space to the increasing number of children being diagnosed with autism in Barbados. This is from the Public Relations Officer of the association, Nadia Simmons. She says there have been some public remarks made identifying a property in the Garrison area however they have not yet heard anything concrete. Ms. Simmon's comment came as the association held a fun day and movie night at All Saint Primary School all in aid of raising funds in faith to outfit the property once it is acquired. Ms. Simmons says the movie night fundraiser was a hit and they would like to make it an annual event. Tonneil Rowe was granted bail when she appeared in court on Tuesday morning on drug and money laundering charges. Rowe 21, the daughter of MP for St Michael North West Neil Rowe, appeared before Magistrate Carolyn Ward Sargeant in the District B Magistrates’ Court at the Eric Holder Municipal Complex in St Joseph. The Barbados Cadet Corp is on a mission to boost its numbers this year and beyond. Commandant, Commander David Dowridge, made the revelation on Mornin' Barbados. Currently, there are just over 1100 youth enrolled in the institution and they're hoping to ultimately to quadruple those numbers in line with the Prime Minister's vision. Commander Dowridge also spoke about the activities that will take place throughout this year for the corp's 120th anniversary. While international experts are predicting slow growth for this year, Regional Economist and Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Justin Robinson, is optimistic about growth in local and regional economies. A two-vehicular accident along Prospect, St James has left some at least one person nursing injuries. The head-on collision between a minibus and an SUV occurred near the entrance to the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. Emergency personnel from several agencies, including the Barbados Fire Service, responded to the scene and motorists must divert to traverse the area. Dr. Fay G. Parris President of the Barbados Nurses Association has a number of goals and priorities set for the organisation after a challenging 2023. In her New Year message, she says COVID-19 and the global mass migration of nurses took them over but they were resilient and innovative in responding to patient needs. She says some of the pluses were better working conditions for nurses, adjustment of allowances, uniform distribution, and others. Dr. Fay Parris says that going into 2024 there are lots of possibilities in store to elevate the profession. Barbados welcomed its newest citizens today. They came into this world at various times during the day, they are three girls and one boy so far. Communication Specialist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Shane Sealy the count is expected to increase. Mr. Sealy was speaking on the occasion of Brydens Stokes presenting the QEH with gifts for the newborns he's thankful for the supply of 50 hampers for 50 mothers. Mr. Sealy is also happy about the six-months partnership and hopes it will continue in the form of more donations. Brydens Stokes Brand Managers Nicole Hall and Sonju Patterson were on hand and spoke about the company's outreach and involvement with the hospital. Local hoteliers are looking forward to the upcoming World Cup in June this year which is expected to give a major boost to the summer bookings 2024. Word of this from Chairman of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, Renée Coppin. She anticipates that this will translate into the same success reaped from the recent England tour which occurred during the early part of December last year. In her New Year's message, Ms. Coppin stressed that the World Cup is scheduled to occur during the month of June and it is the BHTA's goal to ensure that tourism practitioners deliver an excellent experience to all those who come to this island. Ms. Coppin says Barbados has one of the highest per capita incomes in the Caribbean being one of the highest-rated islands on the human development index. She says tourism is our business however we need to continue to build out our other economic sectors.

Resilience, reflection and renewal will be the hallmarks of 2024 for the National Union of Public Workers. President Kimberley Agard in her New Year's message says the trade union will be celebrating 80 years and they will be fully engaging members as they look at the contributions the union made to the lives of public officers. Miss Agard spoke of the plusses for 2023 and some of the shortfalls among them the new salary accord and concerns about contracts. Coconut vendors at Newton, Christ Church are familiarising themselves with a new location in the area. No official word has been given for them to move as the land is still under preparation by Export Barbados and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology. The Barbados Workers Union has reaffirmed its commitment to its members moving into the new year. General Secretary of the Union Toni Moore said in her New Year's speech that in 2024, their focus is on strengthening their relationship with their valued customers. She continued and emphasised that they are committed to increasing their membership, ensuring that every worker in Barbados knows they have a loyal ally in the BWU. Moore also specified that there is the issue of fear of employers that they plan to stomp out in the new year.
