A regional leader is looking at the revolutionary Bridgetown Initiative conceived by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley as a gateway to revolutionise how his country and other small island developing states access international financing. That is the view of Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who is adamant that Caribbean countries are not looking for handouts but rather fair access to the international financial architecture. He was addressing the Dominica Association of Barbados Church Service at our Lady Queen of the Universe Church in Black Rock. It is now transforming itself into the world’s largest free trade port. A project set at steering the nation's youth in the right direction has been launched. The Red Foundation's Community High Achievers Mentoring Programme or CHAMP, is starting with 20 mentees and ten mentors, as they reach out to wider society to get on board. Patron, the Most Honourable Stedson 'Red Plastic Bag' Wiltshire says while many people talk about the state of the youth, it's time to be the intervention that is needed. Senator John King says more cultural penetration is needed to bring about change. He notes as time has evolved so too has parenting, but there is no manual to set the tone. Consultant for CHAMP Shawn Clarke, who conceptualised the mentorship programme, says statistics suggest mentoring can help with some of the deviant behaviour displayed by youth. He believes a contribution can be made to saving the nation's youth and getting society back on track. Dozens of young Barbadians were under the watchful eyes of criminal justice officials today...not because they had broken the law, but as a consequence of wanting to make a positive difference by participating in wholesome activities. It's all part of the first ever Youth Tournament Pop Up, organised by the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit, in conjunction with the National Peace Programme. Director of the Unit, Cheryl Willoughby says those involved showcased their talents in areas they chose, such as dominoes, road tennis and backgammon. She says the Unit is looking to replicate today's activities across Barbados going forward. The nation's youth are not in crisis, but Government remains concerned about the direction in which some young people are trending. Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith is calling on those who remain committed to the development of youth, to assist in positively impacting those at the community level. He was delivering opening remarks at this year's Youth Leadership Training Workshop. Mr. Griffith urges youth leaders to trigger the change they want to see, by reaching out to those youngsters they think may be going in a negative direction. He says the onus is on them to change the community at their level, and implores them to find a cause to rally around which the Ministry will support once the relevant proposals are submitted. There's greater demand for locally produced art pieces overseas, than in Barbados. This is according to Lecturer of Business Law and International Business at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, Ayanna Young-Marshall. The finding is based on research being done by the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management, on the international business operations of artists. Ms. Young-Marshall says while the global arts market is valued at 65 billion dollars, Barbados still lacks the infrastructure to ensure art can be big business. She was addressing the official opening of the NIFCA 2024 Visual Arts Exhibition. The exhibit at the Queen's Park Gallery and Steel Shed featured the work of this year's award winners in fine art, fine craft and photography. The University Lecturer has offered a number of steps artists should bear in mind, including developing their own unique style.
