A senior official of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has suggested the region is becoming the murder capital of the world and has told Barbados and the Caribbean, the regional justice system is in dire need of reform. This regulation forms part of the 2024-2025 implementation of the School Nutritional Policy, as the Ministry of Education Technological and Vocational Training (METVT) continues its plan for a healthier environment at educational institutions. The start of the winter tourist season is still days away, but on Friday four cruise ships docked at the Bridgetown Port. It was the first call for the MSC Explora II, under the captaincy of Serena Malani. Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill welcomed the ship and exchanged commemorative plaques with the Captain. Captain Malani says Barbados is the first stop after an Atlantic crossing and spoke about the voyage. Studies show globally one in three women experience gender-based violence in their lifetime. And in many Caribbean countries, one in two women experience gender-based violence. On Friday, students and partners of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus gathered on the Guild lawns for the Red Shoe Project. Each pair of shoes represents a women or girl who has survived an attack, and will be installed as part of an art exhibition at nine locations across the island beginning November 25. This is in recognition of the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. Rachelle Agard has that story. Jaguars have taken a 1-nil lead in the best-of-three final series in the 'Battle of the Cats' out of season basketball competition. Playing in game one at the BCC Gym, Jaguars gave Cougars their first defeat of the tournament, 71-70. Meanwhile, Pumas beat the Lions in game one of the third place series 85-73. Barbados has committed to protecting 30% of its exclusive economic zone and territorial sea as part of the Marine Spatial Plan. US$50 million has been allocated to the Barbados Environmental Sustainability Fund. This through the completion of a US$150 million debt conversion in September 2022, which allows the plan to take effect. Rachelle Agard reports. Within the coming months, the island's South Coast Sewage Treatment Plant will be upgraded from a primary plant to a tertiary one. The announcement from Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn, who explains the improvements will ensure effluent no longer invades the marine space. He says the move comes as Government enters its second debt for climate swap, for which a resolution will be laid in Parliament on Tuesday. Mr. Straughn was speaking at a media workshop titled "Inclusive Narratives: Amplifying Voices in the Blue Space" hosted by the Barbados Marine Spatial Unit in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank. He says the changes will mean more opportunities for Barbadians. Carols by Candlelight continues to grow each year, allowing the Rotary Club of Barbados to spread holiday cheer while extending a helping hand to various causes. Funds raised last year were used to launch a programme to support young mothers and their children. President of the Rotary, Arlene Ross says through the initiative, they will be instilled with life lessons and vocational training to improve their life chances. The 29th edition of Carols by Candlelight was launched at the Barbados Light and Power's conference room. The event comes off on Sunday, December 8 at Ilaro Court - the official residence of the Prime Minister. Acts include Jan Keizer, Natalie Burke, TC, Betty B and Sheldon Hope. President Elect and Chair of the Fundraising Committee, Jeff Evelyn says the show promises to be the most enjoyable event of the Christmas season. The prevalence of diabetes is greater in Barbadian women compared to males on island. The information was shared during the latest Oscar Jordan Diabetes Lecture on World Diabetes Day observed Thursday. Associate Professor of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto, Dr. Nicole Charles says the finding is unusual given in most parts of the world, diabetes prevalence is similar in both sexes or higher in men. As Government moves to regulate the public service vehicle sector, mandatory PSV courses for drivers and conductors start on January 26 at the Jean and Norma Holder Hospitality Institute. Registration will be facilitated online at the Barbados Community College website, or physical forms are available at the Transport Authority office. This advice is coming from Chief Investment Officer at Fortress Fund, Peter Arender, who says when people invest in long-term assets their money has a greater chance of growing and helping them to outrun the effects of inflation. Mr. Arender was speaking during the Fortress Lunch and learn virtual session. Mr. Arender says while some people see investment as a risk, it is a risk worth taking. The advice comes after some Barbadians who invested heavily in the global international media company TKY are reeling from the fallout. Many of them were left with empty pockets after news spread of the collapse of the online platform. Mr. Straughn says in order for people to recoup their money they must contact the Barbados Police Service and their legal representative for action to be taken in court against interested parties.
