Another resident says he was in bed watching the US Elections, and thought the noise was an earthquake. A recent ruling by the Fair Trading Commission brings some elements of consumer protection, but it offers limited relief for Barbadians grappling with rising costs. This is according to Executive Director of the Barbados Consumer Empowerment Network (BCEN) Maureen Holder. In a decision dated October 29, the FTC approved the Barbados Light & Power's application to use the fuel clause adjustment to recover rental and operations costs of 11 megawatts of temporary aggreko generator units, as the company's gas turbine unit 4 is unexpectedly out of commission. The estimated total monthly cost is $856,046, which will result in a modest increase, as the cost is passed on to the consumer. Ms. Holder says the rental of the generators was for an anticipated temporary surge in demand for a specified activity like the ICC T-20 Men's Cricket World Cup. And she says the timing of the FTC's decision is puzzling given the decision is coming four months after the conclusion of the World Cup, raising doubts as to whether or not consumers shoulder the rental costs for generators that they are unlikely to benefit from. Members of the Small Business Association are being cautioned not to click on any links in emails purporting to be from the SBA, asking for personal and financial information. SBA's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Lynette Holder says she does not know if there is any correlation between a recent government entity being hacked and the emails. However, she notes members started receiving emails immediately after that incident. The CEO states the Data Protection Legislation does not allow for the sharing of members' data to third-party individuals or institutions. Dr. Holder says in this month's SBA webinar scheduled for two weeks' time, they will be highlighting the need for cybersecurity and bringing a more comprehensive awareness to their members. The Hierarchy of the Barbados Police Association is in full support of Government instituting a new retirement age. Word of this from President Inspector Wendley Carter. In another section of the media, Attorney General Dale Marshall stated Government was considering allowing officers of the Barbados Police Service to retire before the national retirement age of 67. Inspector Carter explains before it became mandatory for officers to retire at 67, officers were allowed to retire at 55. However, they would have had to accept a reduced pension. Inspector Carter also expressed concerns over a vast exit of officers should the new age become a reality. He says TBPS will now have to ensure succession planning to ensure that critical areas within the law enforcement agency are not left empty. Inspector Carter says recruitment will also need to play a critical part going forward, and a reservist system similar to that of the Barbados Defence Force will work.
