A local preacher has voiced grave concern about what he calls a spirit of murder manifesting in the acts of violence seen across Barbados. Reverend Dr. Michael Holford of the Abundant Life Assembly Church believes this spirit is deeply embedded in the hearts of some people. He made the point this morning while delivering a sermon at the church in recognition of the launch of Energy Month 2024. Today's attendance included officials of the Division of Energy as well as officials of the Ministry, including Minister of Energy and Business Senator Lisa Cummins. Reverend Holford noted that murder does not begin with the act; according to him it starts in the heart. He believes the issue is a personal and complex one and is about much more than authorities addressing gun importation. Reverend Holford says it starts with changing the hearts of individuals. Police are tonight on the hunt for a motorcyclist and a pillion rider who are wanted in connection with two shootings earlier today. Acting Commissioner of Police Erwin Boyce made this known at a hastily called media conference this evening at the Oistins Police Station. It was held after two masked men on a motorcycle opened fire in the area of King of Fades barbershop in Sheraton Mall carpark in Christ Church this afternoon. One man was injured while exiting the shop, and a ricocheting bullet injured a woman inside the shop. The riders fled the scene. Subsequently two masked men on a motorcycle opened fire on a group of men who were under a tree in Silver Sands, Christ Church. A man who is said to have been walking home, was struck in his lower body. Acting Commissioner Boyce says police believe the two wanted men are connected to both incidents, and a team has been tasked with working alongside detectives in the Southern Division to deal with such matters. He reminds Barbadians it is an offense to harbour people who are wanted by police. Anyone with any information on these incidents are asked to get in contact. As the Government works to make Barbados a more resilient nation, a key priority on the disaster risk reduction agenda is the deliberate effort to improve the national Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS). Minister of Home Affairs and Information Wilfred Abrahams says this is critical to the disaster management process. He was speaking during the inaugural meeting of the MHEWS Management Advisory Council (TMAC). The Minister says weather systems are more frequent, intense and sometimes develop much faster. Using Hurricane Beryl as an example, he says that system went from a tropical depression to a hurricane in approximately 42 hours, and from a tropical storm to a major hurricane in under 24 hours. Minister Abrahams says MHEWS will provide a multi-discipline approach in providing the science for understanding and monitoring diverse threats. He commends the Barbados Meteorological Services and the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology for their efforts. However, he says the missing piece of the puzzle is the ability to get warnings and information out to those who are required to make informed decisions as quickly as possible. The United Nations Agency for International Development Policy and Regulatory Reform for Resillience (PROSE) Chief of Party Marianela Guzman says this system represents a major step forward on the road to enhancing resilience in Barbados. PROSE has committed to assisting Barbados with the activation and implementation of the recently approved MHEWS policies. By next year Barbados will know the status of its new Constitution. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says following Barbados being named a Republic three years ago, a Constitutional Reform Commission was established and has since handed its report to the President of Barbados the Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason and the Prime Minister's Office. She says as Barbados re-engages, re-ignites and re-imagines it's path forward, there is no better time than November to review this report. She says Barbadians must recognise their responsibility not only to light up Barbados, but also to light up their consciousness and sense of purpose. This as Barbados celebrates 58 years of Independence. The City of Bridgetown came alive as the switch was flipped at the annual Sagicor Life Inc. Lighting ceremony. For the first time, the switch was flipped in another location simultaneously - at the Shirley Chisholm Primary School to highlight the centennial celebrations which coincide with the island's Independence Day celebrations. He was speaking to CBC News following an incident earlier this week in which a man was chased and beaten to death after attempting to flee the scene of an accident.
