By next year Barbados will know the status of its new Constitution. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says following Barbados being named a Republic three years ago, a Constitutional Reform Commission was established and has since handed its report to the President of Barbados the Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason and the Prime Minister's Office. She says as Barbados re-engages, re-ignites and re-imagines it's path forward, there is no better time than November to review this report. She says Barbadians must recognise their responsibility not only to light up Barbados, but also to light up their consciousness and sense of purpose. This as Barbados celebrates 58 years of Independence. The City of Bridgetown came alive as the switch was flipped at the annual Sagicor Life Inc. Lighting ceremony. For the first time, the switch was flipped in another location simultaneously - at the Shirley Chisholm Primary School to highlight the centennial celebrations which coincide with the island's Independence Day celebrations. Dr. Archer-Bradshaw says this deeply influenced educational structures, curricula and values. She pointed to partnerships with the Division of Culture and National Cultural Foundation as evidence the Ministry has been working to include heritage and cultural studies as parts of the curricula. Members of the island's judiciary should now be better equipped to deal with matters of competition law, public procurement and customs, and trade facilitation. This forms part of a project of the 11th European Development Fund Support to Cariforum member states. It furthers the implementation of their economic partnership agreement commitments, to ensure competition remains robust under regional and international treaties. Participants will be lectured to by Professor Emeritus and former France Supreme Court Judge Frederic Jenny. The EU's Delegation to Barbados head of Cooperation David Mongollon says this training will enhance the capacity for national and regional judicial personnel to resolve competition law-related disputes. He says to date, over 13 people have benefitted from training and best practices in the subject area, with one person being awarded a scholarship for a graduate certificate in customs administration. Mr. Mongollon also says several other programmes are being implemented across the region, including the Europe Latin American and Caribbean programme of assistance against transnational organised crime in the Caribbean. Barbados' Minister of Energy and Business Senator Lisa Cummins has assumed the presidency of the hemispheric body Latin American Energy Organisation (OLADE). In accepting the role for 2024-2025, Senator Cummins committed the hemispheric body to ensuring that the unique and specific energy-transitioning issues facing the Caribbean are integrated fully into the work of the Organisation. She also pointed out that within OLADE, there are sub-regional differences that need to be captured within clear, defined work programmes on the way forward. Senator Cummins says conversations on countries engaged in energy transitioning, while others are experiencing energy crises, are also on the table as an important issue. This will take prominence as Senator Cummins chairs the Organisation and Ministerial Council, which is a significant contributor to the sustainable development and energy security of the region. The Rotary Club of Barbados has made a donation to the Barbados Diabetes Foundation, which officials say will go a long way. The $22,558.36 cheque forms part of funds collected through a $1,000,000 project undertaken by the Rotary Club for non-communicable diseases. General Manager of the Barbados Diabetes Foundation Marsha White-Hughes explains the funds will be used to purchase a much-needed autoclave to sterilise equipment used in the treatment of diabetic patients. Further, Ms. White-Hughes says there are over 60,000 diagnosed cases of people living with the NCD. She says type 2 diabetes is the biggest problem in Barbados, and encourages those over 35 to get tested. Past President of the Rotary Club, Ermine Darroux-Francis says the 2023 Bridgetown Initiative called on entities like Rotary to help stem the fight against NCDs.
