Barbados has been advised proper legislation is required for the Environmental Protection Department (EPA). The matter was highlighted during a Joint Select Committee Session on the Social Sector and the Environment on the Health Services Amendment Bill 2024. Further insight was also provided into the role and functions of the EPD. Attorney-at-law, Christine Toppin-Allahar says everyone is doing their best even with the current deficiencies. Meanwhile, the Barbados Bar Association says the Health Services Act has served Barbados, having been enacted in the late 1960s and amended several times. However, President Kaye Williams queried if the time is not right for reform or further amendments to the Act, to meet the needs of modern Barbados. The Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office has cautioned Barbadians not to fall victim to fraudsters hiding behind legitimate business names. The Rotary Club of Barbados has made a donation to the Barbados Diabetes Foundation, which officials say will go a long way. The $22,558.36 cheque forms part of funds collected through a $1,000,000 project undertaken by the Rotary Club for non-communicable diseases. General Manager of the Barbados Diabetes Foundation Marsha White-Hughes explains the funds will be used to purchase a much-needed autoclave to sterilise equipment used in the treatment of diabetic patients. Further, Ms. White-Hughes says there are over 60,000 diagnosed cases of people living with the NCD. She says type 2 diabetes is the biggest problem in Barbados, and encourages those over 35 to get tested. Past President of the Rotary Club, Ermine Darroux-Francis says the 2023 Bridgetown Initiative called on entities like Rotary to help stem the fight against NCDs. The Barbados Society of Psychology has suggested Barbadians post-COVID have been warming up to seeking help from psychologists. President Ronald Pope says despite reservations by some due to the stigma associated with mental health, more people have turned to psychologists and other specialists. With Psychology Week upcoming, Mr. Pope says the theme "Promoting Mental Health for Community Peace and Wellness" was selected after assessing the current state of affairs in Barbados. The week will be observed from November 3 to 9. Barbados wants to see a normalisation of ties between Cuba and the United States. Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Kereeta Whyte stated the island's position as it joined with the majority of UN members Wednesday in reiterating a call for an end to the embargo against Cuba. She says the island values its strong relationship with both countries, noting the step will pave the way for greater peace, cooperation and development in the region. Barbados also wants Cuba removed from the list of countries of that sponsor terrorism. Fresh off the delivery of the budget in the UK, Barbados has been told an economically stable United Kingdom will make it a stronger and more credible international partner. Deputy British High Commissioner to Barbados, Charley Williams in dissecting the presentation by Chancellor, Rachel Reeves says measures introduced are aimed at putting the UK economy back on a sustainable footing and driving investment to push growth. She says Britain will remain one of the largest providers of overseas development assistance. Ms. Williams was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. Despite the announcement of tax rises and a hike in air passenger for a short-haul flights and private jet users, Ms. Williams doesn't expect the measures will impact travel. Central Bank Governor, Dr. Kevin Greenidge is urging Barbadians to do their due diligence before investing their money in get-rich-quick schemes. His advice comes as one such scheme is claiming to have been endorsed by Dr. Greenidge. Speaking during the Central Bank's latest Economic Review, he told members of the media the matter is being investigated. Dr. Greenidge has highlighted three red flags he says are usually associated with these illegitimate schemes. Pumas have joined Cougars as the second team to qualify for the semi-finals of the 'Battle of the Cats' out-a-season basketball competition. Last night at the Barbados Community College Gym, Pumas dispatched Lions 74-62 to lead the standings on 10 points and assure themselves of a top-four finish in the preliminaries. Hundreds gathered at the St. John Parish Church to bid farewell to the longest serving Principal of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, Sir Keith Hunte. Among them were family, friends and other past and present UWI Principals. Son, Dr. John Hunte says while his father is well known for his academic accomplishments, his loved ones will remember him as a committed family man who looked after his four children's needs even when they became adults. Delivering a tribute on behalf of UWI, Vice Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles says Sir Keith will be remembered for his kindness, social warmth, and decency. He says UWI has been a prime beneficiary of his professional values and leadership style. Sir Keith, who served as Principal from 1983 to 2002, died on October 3 at age 87. He was buried at the Church. Group Chief Executive Officer of Chukka Adventure Caribbean Mark Melville says the new cruise investment expected for the Bridgetown Port will motivate them to forward invest in Barbados. He says with adjustments to be made to the Port, they will begin investments now rather than wait until the work is done. Mr. Melville was speaking during the announcement of a new business partnership between his company and Hunte's Gardens, which is expected to increase revenue and cruise tourism. Work on the Alma Parris Memorial Secondary School has been completed. Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer Julia Beckles addressed concerns regarding a mold infestation at the St Paul's Primary and confirmed that teachers would be allowed to address the private contractor who investigated the outbreak. Prior to her arrival at the school, teachers protested over a mold infestation at the Brittons Cross Road, St. Michael school which they said contributed to a spate of illnesses among the staff. Chevening Officer, Annette Miller says they've been a decline in applications from Barbadians but it's a fantastic opportunity. President of the Chevening Alumni Association Danielle Howell, who has benefitted from the Scholarship, says it's an immersive experience and is urging Barbadians to apply before applications close next week.
