Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith is calling on corporate Barbados to help sponsor national activities to commemorate the country's Independence. He says there is always a need for additional sponsorship to go towards the hosting of events, as he commended Sagicor Life Inc. for sponsoring the Lighting Ceremony for the past 28 years. Minister Griffith made the appeal while accepting the sponsorship cheque for this year's Sagicor Life Inc. Lighting Ceremony from the title sponsor. Assistant Vice President of Alternate and Digital Channels at Sagicor Life Inc. Carolyn Shepherd says they are pleased to continue sponsoring the national event. Under the theme 'Celebrating Our Communities: Re-engaging, Re-igniting, Re-imagining', this year's ceremony will take place this Friday at National Heroes Square, the City, from 5:30 p.m. As Barbados honours US Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm's 100th birthday, the Community Independence Secretariat has agreed to have the Lighting Ceremony extended to the Shirley Chisholm Primary School, Vauxhall, Christ Church. The Head Boy and Girl from the school will be flicking the switch at the event.
