A cashless system is to be rolled out in some public service vehicles as early as December. This, as the Alliance Owners of Public Transport, moves forward with its plan to minimise the cash handled by operators in an effort to deter would-be thieves. Chairman, Roy Raphael, says the organisation has been in talks with suppliers and other stakeholders. Mr Raphael was among the guests on CBC TV 8's the People's Business Programme last night. Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Mark Haynes, has acknowledged the possibility of job losses for conductors, whose job it is to collect fares. But, with a shortage of about 200 drivers plaguing the sector, he foresees an opportunity for some displaced people to transition into new roles. Officials are also optimistic this increase in drivers could help reduce the long hours for some. President of the Barbados Union of Teachers Rudy Lovell is calling for dedicated and specialised support in getting to the crux of the matter with the ongoing rise in violence and indiscipline across the education spectrum. He says the issue and challenges as it stands cannot continue. And he also stresses the need for parents to play a vital role in combating deviant behaviour, with lessons in conflict resolution and the promotion of dialogue over aggression. Mr. Lovell was speaking during the BUT's Inaugural President's Gala and Award Ceremony under the theme 'BUT 50 and Beyond'. The president also notes that despite financial struggles experienced by some teachers not being paid overdue increments, unpaid allowances, and incorrect salary brackets, with some issues persisting for years, they continue to dip into their pockets to provide essential supplies for their classrooms. And he says despite numerous graduates from the Erdiston Teachers' Training College, there remain numerous vacancies across schools, which he urges education officials to fill promptly. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is touting the benefits of a regional debt-for-climate swap. Barbados signed such an agreement in September 2022, allowing the country to divert existing debt service to address challenges created by the climate crisis. Over the next 15 years, the island is expected to save 50 million US dollars. Speaking during an interview with the IMF Today programme, Ms. Mottley suggested the model could be expanded to CARICOM.
