Government is moving to introduce a new programme to help stem the rising tide of violence in schools. Confirmation of this from Minister in the Office of the Attorney General with Responsibility for Crime Corey Lane. He says his office is working alongside a number of Ministries to identify and initiate necessary interventions for those children involved in conflict. The Minister stresses they have already been working with the Ministry of Education to arrest violence in schools, as prevention is always better than cure. He was speaking following the signing of a Sister City Relationship with New York City. Regarding gun violence, Minister Lane says his office has been at work behind the scenes on crime prevention, but the remit of crime fighting remains the mandate of the Barbados Police Service. Barbados' Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong, is hopeful Haiti and the Dominican Republic can find a way to coexist. He was commenting on the Dominican Republic's announcement earlier this month that it would be expelling 10,000 immigrants a week. Haiti lodged a complaint with the Organisation of American States as a result, but according to Ambassador Comissiong has not yet approached CARICOM on the matter. However, the DR has applied for Associate Membership of CARICOM. Ambassador Comissiong, who is part of a Technical Working Group considering the application, says this latest development will have to be factored in. The state of the island's school plants is the subject of an investigation tonight. Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw made the revelation to members of the media on the sidelines of the Ministry's Arts in Focus exhibition launch. She says the comprehensive report which is being worked on by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Communications Specialist, along with the Education Technical Management Unit, will soon be completed. Addressing the Barbados Labour Party's Annual Conference this weekend, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley declared that by next year she wants to see schools beautified and looking like children should want to be there. Meanwhile, Dr. Archer-Bradshaw says the Ministry continues to take swift action to work with principals, boards of management and teachers to resolve environmental issues at school plants whenever they arise. Parkinson Memorial School, one of those institutions closed recently after a significant numbers of teachers stayed away over concerns about bed bugs and other issues, reopened today.
