Over 20 youth cricket clubs and some secondary and primary schools recently received a number of cricket kits to aid in the continued development of the young cricketers enrolled in their programmes. As we hear from President of the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club, the initiative was done in conjunction with DP World - sponsors of this year's ICC men's T20 World Cup. The initiative was fully endorsed by the Barbados Cricket Association and Secretary Senator Gregory Nicholls advised that what needs to also be included in the programmes is the principle that cricket is a viable profession. With assets of over 1.7 billion dollars, and touted as one of the largest credit unions in the region, the Barbados Public Workers' Co-Operative Credit Union Limited is being cautioned not to rest on its laurels. It's coming from General Manager of the Barbados Co-operative & Credit Union League Limited, Anthony Pilgrim who says the credit union represents 41.36 Percent of the total population and 5.7% of the total financial system. He was addressing the Credit Union's Annual International Credit Union Day Luncheon. Mr. Pilgrim is calling on public workers as the largest credit union on the island, to lead the way in contributing to national development. As part of the Ministry's Education Transformation Programme principals and teachers have received instruction on how to use data to drive improvement in the teaching process. A workshop put on by the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training uses data to help measure the progress of the children in the classroom. Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw told the teachers that instructional leadership is the way to go and they intend to continue professional development courses. Addressing the participants on the final day of the sessions at Erdiston Training College, she added that the workshop was not by chance. Workshop Facilitator Dr. Jennifer Obediah spoke about the reach of the training, which is geared towards improving class four students. Supporters of the Barbados Labour Party are at this hour gathering, as the party kicks off its 85th Annual Conference, at the Christ Church Foundation School. It begins with a cocktail reception and awards ceremony, where more than 30 people will be recognised. When a CBC team visited this evening, teams were busy adding the final touches ahead of the start of the event. Minister of Home Affairs and Conference Chair, Wilfred Abrahams, has also addressed suggestions the set-up for the conference displaced the school's students. A caller on a radio programme also took issue with the painting of the floor of the school hall. The long-awaited Hyatt Ziva should get fully underway by January 2025. Developer Mark Maloney says by next month Menard Group, a company commissioned out of France, to create rock piers, is set to begin work. But he says while this project will reap massive dividends for the local construction sector, there is not enough resources on island with other projects ongoing. He was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for another project on the west coast. Mr. Maloney says this project should employ about 1500 people overall. Already he has signed a US$90 million deal with the African Export-Import Bank, and arrangements with other financiers have been finalised. Food shopping in Barbados is being made easier. Price Check, an online application was launched by Minister of Energy and Business, Senator Lisa Cummins at her office today. She told a media conference the initiative is in two phases and is the result of years of in-depth work and research in association with stakeholders. The Minister said Price Check is not an adversarial tool but a partnership between Government the consumers and businesses and gave details. The University of the West Indies at Cave Hill has recognised several of its students who have attained the highest classifications of degrees UWI can confer. They were the toast of the evening as the university hosted a reception in honour of scholarly excellence. Among the degrees conferred, bachelors with first class honours, masters with distinction and master or doctor of philosophy with high commendation. Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UWI Cave Hill, Professor Clive Landis acknowledged the sacrifices in light of the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He is confident the students are now better equipped with the knowledge needed to compete and strive in the world. PhD graduate, Senator Dr. Crystal Drakes in reminiscing on her journey, admits there were good and bad days. But she says she and her colleagues were determined to finish what they started. Barbados has warned of a doomsday scenario for millions of inhabitants of the Caribbean due to rising sea levels, telling the Organisation of American States the matter demands urgent policy responses. Permanent Representative, Ambassador Victor Fernandes cited increases in sea level recorded over the last decade and the impact on coasts of countries in the region, as he addressed a special meeting of the OAS Permanent Council on the consequences and legal implications of sea level rise. Ambassador Fernandes advised the OAS that difficult but necessary conversations must be held on the way forward. Ambassador Fernandes adds that access to long term financing, as outlined in the Bridgetown Initiative, is critical. New elements have been added to this year's Richard Stoute Teen Talent competition. Technical Officer Randy Eastmond says two lucky contestants will be awarded the Richard Stoute Award and the Spouge Award. He says while there's been a marked increase in patronage, he wants the public to attend the final rounds of competition, which are set to feature live bands. The Barbados Fire Service has seen a significant reduction in fires. Acting Chief Fire Officer Henderson Patrick says overall fire calls at this point in time when compared to the same period last year, are down by 200. He made the revelation while speaking to CBC News. The Acting Chief says the favourable reduction is a result of weather conditions as well as an increasing number of Barbadians taking fire safety measures seriously. Barbados intends to do whatever it takes to avoid being blacklisted or under any monitoring programme again. That assurance from The Most Honourable Senator Reginald Farley, Chairman of the Anti-Money Laundering Network and President of the Senate. Senator Farley was addressing the Compliance Unit's Regional Conference 2024, taking place at the Wyndham Grand Barbados. Mr Farley said the next mutual evaluation for Barbados by the Financial Action Task Force is scheduled for June 2027. As a consequence, he said, they are working on a three-year plan to ensure a positive outcome to the evaluation. He noted that during that period, education programmes will be arranged for all stakeholders and several reviews done, including relevant legislation. There is concern about an explosion of renal disease in Barbados in the last few years. According to the Acting Chief Operations Officer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Anthony Harris, three new dialysis patients are admitted weekly. He says there are 164 patients on record at the QEH and an additional 60 outsourced to Sils Dialysis Barbados and the St John Polyclinic. He was speaking during a donation of two more dialysis machines to the QEH's artificial kidney unit by the Barbados International Business Association Charity in honour of the late Ben Arrindell. President of BIBA Marlon Yarde says this is their second donation of dialysis machines to the QEH. It is valued at over 85 thousand dollars, bringing their contribution to the artificial kidney unit to over $200,000. This is made possible with funds raised through the BIBA Charity Ben Arrindell International Golf Classic. This year's fundraiser comes off on November 1 at the golf club at Durant's, Christ Church.
