Women at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex painted the facility pink on Saturday, in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And they are all encouraging both men and women to get their breasts checked to be aware of any eventualities. Coordinator Rhonda Wiltshire-Hall says this is the second time they have supported the cause. Fish vendor Sylvia Small says it is important for her to get her breasts checked annually. Similarly, Judy Sobers says that after going through the experience with a family member, she is not taking any chances. Quick action by the Barbados Fire Service stopped a fire at the old Branckers Building in Fontabelle from spreading. The building closed some years ago and caught fire around 3: 30 p.m. And several businesses were asked to close while the blaze was brought under control. A total of 25 officers with 6 water tenders from the Bridgetown Port, Arch Hall, St John and the Bridgetown branch responded. Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Marlon Small stated that the building was considered to be derelict and these types of buildings always cause a major risk for fires. Barbados is to have an Accreditation and Qualifications Authority and a National Qualifications Framework. The announcement from Executive Director of the Barbados Accreditation Council Lisa Gale, as she led off remarks at the BAC's 20th anniversary panel discussion at the Grande Salle of the Central Bank of Barbados. Ms. Gale says the approval represents a major milestone. There has been a decline in fire reports across the island but the Barbados Fire Service will be doing its best to increase its staff and hand out more promotions according to Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard. Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams lauded the officers at the service for their hard work and sacrifice which has kept Barbadians safe from danger. Some Bay Garden stall operators have been told by the Ministry of Health that the closure of their stalls may go beyond tomorrow. An unidentified health inspector overseeing the work said the popular Bay Gardens in Oistins, Christ Church, was closed for the last few days for maintenance, however the length of closure may be affected by the absence of some stall owners. Chairman of Bay Gardens Inc. Kemar Harris said the work was not the same as what was done solely in preparation for the Cricket World Cup. (Video by Shanice King)

The Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority has found a partner in the digital payment app, mMoney as it seeks to overcome the local banking hurdle the industry currently faces. A memorandum of understanding was inked at the opening of the conference, which Chief Executive Officer, Shanika Roberts-Odle says will create a solution to some of the challenges facing the fledgeling industry. Despite this step, Ms. Roberts-Odle says hurdles still exist on the local and international fronts. Memorandums of understanding were also signed with other strategic partners. The partnership with Export Barbados addresses issues pertaining to scientific testing and manufacturing, the marketing of the industry along with the exploration of a Medicinal Cannabis Waste to Energy Project. The final MOU signals the island joining other countries onboard the Caribbean Cannabis Forum. Ms. Roberts-Odle details the benefits of being a part of the forum.

Barbados has welcomed the inclusion of Caribbean states in discussions at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC. Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Kirk Humphrey, at a previous forum, had pushed for greater involvement of the Caribbean. Minister Humphrey extended thanks to the leadership of ECLAC for making the region feel more welcomed and integrated into various discussions. The Barbadian Minister is in Peru for the 40th session of ECLAC. He participated in a panel discussion in how to reduce inequality and foster inclusion and social mobility on day two of the event. During that forum, he shared the policies implemented by Barbados aimed at reducing inequality. Mr. Humphrey wants the region to do away with the notion that there's a technical solution for every challenge. Children's eye care in Barbados has come a long way with the school's eye clinic which now has screening as a component. Dr. Trevor Drakes who is head of Department of Ophthalmology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital says they check children at special intervals. He was speaking as 100 children visited the department in celebration of World Sight Day where the theme was 'Children Love Your Eyes'. Dr. Drakes is also encouraging children and adults to take a break away from screens. Minister of Home Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams wants doctors to be more open-minded when it comes to using medicinal cannabis for treatment. Mr. Abrahams says all aspects of medicinal cannabis need to be on the table, and as such the acceptance and coverage of the plant as a treatment is important. He says moving forward it is critical, not just from the perspective of wanting a bigger and better industry for Barbados, but also for comprehensive health care. Mr. Abrahams' comments came at the opening of the Bajcan Medical Conference and Expo spearheaded by the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority. Acknowledging Cannabis is still illegal in Barbados outside of medicinal and spiritual use, Mr. Abrahams says Barbados must re-evaluate how it deals with ganja. He says discussions must now focus on what comes next.

A call is being made for safety and health committees to take on responsibility for implementing the Workplace Wellness Policy of Barbados in their organisations. The appeal is coming from Minister of Labour, Social Security and Third Sector Colin Jordan. He says safety and health committees have a major role to play in supporting healthy behaviour among employees to improve health outcomes. He was addressing a press conference to announce plans for the Workplace Wellness in Action Forum to be hosted by the National Committee on Wellness in the Workplace on Wednesday, October 16. The one-day event, which will take place in the auditorium at Solidarity House, Barbados Workers' Union, Harmony Hall, St. Michael, will run from 9 a.m. Until 4 p.m. BWU Executive Assistant to the General Secretary, Shakeda Williams, says the forum will showcase successful initiatives from organisations across the island and participants will benefit from panel discussions, presentations from wellness professionals, and exhibitions.
