An all-out effort is on by the local corporate community to once again elevate the reading levels of students in Barbados by rekindling interest from children in reading paperback books. It is an undertaking spearheaded by the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited, ICBL, and a number of corporate partners. Assistant Vice President of Human Resources at ICBL Limited Gail Hinkson expressed concern about the gradual decline in young people reading books in Barbados and the repercussions this could have for Barbados as one of the leaders of education in the region. She made the remark during the launch of the 5th annual ICBL National Junior Spelling B Competition at ICBL Headquarters in Bridgetown. Ms. Hinkson says the response from the used book drive donated by corporate Barbados has been encouraging and she is appealing for Barbadians on a whole to join the initiative. The Ministry of Education is gearing up to tackle any decline in the rate of literacy as is being reported among school-aged children in Barbados, head-on. Word of this from acting Education Officer at the Ministry of Education Technological and Vocational Training Gloria Haynes who notes they are about to launch a number of reading initiatives. She made the remark as she addressed the launch of the 5th annual ICBL National Junior Spelling B Competition at the ICBL headquarters in Bridgetown as part of Education Month. Ms. Haynes lauded the concept of the Spelling B and the title sponsors who made the programme possible noting that it complemented the programme of the ministry in building out the education sector at the classroom as well as the individual student level. The National Junior Spelling B Competition commences on October 18 and climaxes with he finals being held on November 5. Local live stock farmers should soon see a reduction in feed prices. Pinnacle feeds has announced a three percent decrease from the first of November. The announcement from Managing Director of Roberts Manufacturing and Pinnacle Feeds, Rakeesh Bernard. The Managing Director says while these reductions had not entirely offset the effects of the global grain price inflation that occurred in previous years, he was happy to see prices trending in a direction that would be welcomed by all stakeholders in the agricultural community. Barbados continues to press for a scaling up of adaptation finance taking its message to a pre-cop meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan. The meeting brought together ministers to discuss key political aspects of the negotiations, to find solutions to outstanding issues and set the tone for the upcoming united nations climate change conference of parties set for next month. Minister in the Prime Minister's Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight told the forum a right sizing of the financial architecture is required along with the global governance system. Minister Munro-Knight stressed the need for collaboration across ministries and climate budgeting. Milton slammed into Florida overnight as a Category 3 storm with winds reaching 180 miles per hour, making it the strongest hurricane ever so late in the season in the Gulf of Mexico. With renewed focus placed on eye health this World Sight Day, an optometrist wants Barbadians onboard in protecting the vision of the future generations. Prashan Seepersad of Courts Optical is impressing on the importance of getting children's eyes screened, noting infants should have their first eye examination between six and 12 months. The theme for World Sight Day is "Children, Love Your Eyes". Marketing Officer of Courts Optical, Nadia Branker says the company is playing its part in promoting good eye health through the provision of eye examinations and more recently, evening clinics. A one-off cash grant of $200,000 GYD (just over $1930 BDS) will be distributed to every household in Guyana. The announcement was made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during a special sitting of Parliament - his second address to Parliament since taking office. The cash grant forms part of a raft of measures the President says is part of a blueprint to take Guyana forward and safeguard the quality of life. President Ali further announced all public sector workers will earn no less than $100,000 GYD monthly by the end of 2025. Food security is also on the agenda of Guyana's government, and work is continuing on creating a digital economy for the country. The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has heeded calls for greater youth involvement in disaster risk reduction. Eexecutive Director Elizabeth Riley says the Barbados-based CDEMA has supported that vision and identified youth-led strategies aimed at empowering vulnerable groups. Her remarks came during a hybrid intergenerational dialogue titled "Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future". It was hosted by CDEMA and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. Ms. Riley says as an organisation, CDEMA is poised to do more, stating the future depends on the empowerment of the younger generation. Work is advancing as Barbados updates its Mental Health Act. Chairman of the National Mental Health Commission, Dr. Maisha Emmanuel provided the update as Barbados joined with the globe in observing World Mental Health Day. She revealed on Mornin' Barbados that the island is revamping its entire approach towards mental health. Dr. Emmanuel provided some insight into the new Act which focuses on individual autonomy and the next of kin.
