Former Democratic Labour Party (DLP) President Dr Ronnie Yearwood recently sat down with Senior Multimedia Journalist Colville Mounsey to unpack his tenure and eventual expulsion from the party. As he contemplates his future in politics, Yearwood has not ruled out the possibility of forming a new political party. However, he emphasised that his family is currently his priority in life. Government is embracing new technology to better track the development of students as well as gauge the skill level of teachers within the classrooms setting. This from Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training Kay McConney. She says the introduction of this new data analytics technology from Google should make for better monitoring to ensure targetted interventions by the Ministry are attained. Minister McConney made the remarks today during the launch of Google Workspace for Education Plus in Barbados. She described the technology as a game changer, noting it would help bridge the gap between online and classroom learning. Barbados and the region are getting much-needed help in the fight against transnational organised crime and illicit firearms. The assistance is coming from Interpol and CARICOM IMPACS. Some of the plans are being discussed at the 8th Edition of the Dialogue on an effective multilateral policing architecture against global threat, under the theme of an "Integrated Security Architecture - Multilateral Action for a Safer World". Young people who possess a passion for entrepreneurship now have the opportunity to receive training at the newly launched Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme’s Community Business Labs. The nine-day initiative was launched on October 1st at the Speightstown Resource Centre in St Peter and youth enterprise officer, Claire Inniss, said it was geared toward young people ages 18 to 35 who had an interest in entrepreneurship. The program will be divided into three zones and it will start in the north, expanding to the remaining south and central zones. (Video by Jameel Springer)

Residents of College Savannah, St John, are questioning the actions of Government regarding the future of the now-destroyed Sussex Pavilion and playing field. Last month a group of upset residents met with Democratic Labour Party (DLP) spokesman for community development and social welfare Simon Clarke at the former Sussex grounds. The stars aligned for Mark Forde, who is now $1.8 million richer. Accompanied by his mother Isylma Forde, the new millionaire was presented with his congratulatory cheque yesterday at the Rubis Gas Station in Market Hill, St George, where he bought his winning Barbados Lottery Mega 6 ticket. Forde, who said he occasionally tried his luck with lotteries, was shocked to discover he had become a millionaire. A welder and engineer by trade, he builds burglar bars and fencing, a business which he planned to invest in with his new earnings. (Video by Reco Moore)

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) will officially make a request to the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) that the people of St Lucy be exempt from paying bills until their water problems are resolved. A group of party members including Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne, fourth vice-president Shaquani Hunte and spokesperson for Culture and the Creative Arts, Alvin Toppin, were in St Lucy yesterday distributing bottles of water as well as empty bottles for the residents to gather water from the water trucks. Local beekeepers will now be able to properly feed their bees, after challenges doing so with the passing of Hurricane Beryl. The Association of Caribbean Beekeepers' Organisations has donated 6,000 pounds of pollen substitute, which is to be used as protein for the insects. Senior Agricultural Assistant and Lead Officer for Apiculture in the Ministry of Agriculture Bernard Thompson says the donation of 150 bags of pollen is to assist just over 90 active beekeepers with over 900 managed colonies on island. The Barbados Postal Service continues to evolve despite the advances in technology. And according to Minister of Home Affairs and Information Wilfred Abrahams postal services globally are adapting to the new realities. He was speaking during his message to mark World Post Day 2024 today. Minister Abrahams says while recognising the logistical challenges posed without the BPS having its own fleet of aircraft, they have formed strategic partnerships to bridge those gaps. One such notable partnership is with DHL, which enables the BPS to offer a co-branded worldwide express service to countries where the Barbadian network faces significant limitations. As part of its broader modernisation efforts, the BPS is currently rolling out a new postal software solution - Postglobal by Reason Solutions Ltd. There's concern the incidence of homelessness in Barbados is increasing. In response, the National Task Force on Homelessness, created by Government, is working to arrest the situation. Deputy Chairman Jerome Gittens says the University of the West Indies has been tasked with compiling data, which he says will be useful to the Task Force and Government. According to Mr. Gittens, family conflict is a major cause of homelessness in Barbados. The passion for the fight against cancer grows every year and this is evident through the support extended to causes, including the recently held CIBC's Walk for the Cure. On Sunday, Barbadians braved the elements for the Caribbean's biggest fundraising walk in aid of the breast screening programme of the Barbados Cancer Society. CIBC's Walk for the Cure Manager Samantha Suttle extended gratitude to all sponsors, supporters and volunteers for a successful event. She says over 50 sponsors were onboard this year. Among other activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is Pink Ribbon Week. Coordinator, Betty Lynch says it gets underway on October 20 with a church service at the Hawthorn Memorial Church.
