In an unprecedented move, much-needed financial assistance is being provided by Government for people with several types of disabilities. They now qualify for a non-contributory pension. Amendments have been made to the Sexual Offences Bill which Attorney General Dale Marshall says restores to the law the protection afforded to people under the age of 16. In leading off Debate in the Lower House, Mr. Marshall told Parliament the language pertaining to serious indecency was not satisfactory and there were other areas that needed to be clarified and addressed. He says Government has sought to standardise the arrangements regarding age, introducing the definition of a minor in the Bill. Mr. Marshall says the amendments touch on the issue of rape, recognising it can take place in many ways. It also takes into consideration people with medical disorders and physical disabilities pertaining to consent. The Attorney General says the country must be prepared to call out such acts, as he says the legislation for the first time addresses grooming. As the Yuletide season approaches the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is asking families not to abandon their elderly relatives at the healthcare institution. Chief Operations Officer Dr. Christine Greenidge says historically there is an uptick in elderly able-bodied people left at the facility, as the Christmas season draws near. She says there are between 35 to 45 elderly people at the QEH, who should not be there. Forensic Pathologist Dr Shubhakar Karra Paul warns Barbadians to wear their seatbelts as he believes some road users were underestimating the severity of injuries that can be caused during accidents when they decide not to wear the safety device. Paul told Nation News that in many of the post mortems he had carried out during his three-and-a-half years here, death could possibly have been prevented if the persons were wearing seatbelts. Regional economist Marla Dukharan says the more than 100-year-old, 3000-strong bilateral double tax treaty network allows for the legal avoidance of taxes by foreign companies in developing countries. According to her, there's a study that shows capacity constraints and imperfect negotiation strategies in developing countries are exploited by capital-exporting states, shielding multinationals from taxation. 3000-strong. The long delays for people waiting on results for CT scans at the QEH's Accident and Emergency Department should soon be reduced significantly. The bragging rights will stay with Scotty's Car Rentals St. Leonard's Boys upper 5th, as they retained the title in the 35's age group of the Bragging Rights Old Scholars Football Tournament. Playing at the Lumber Company Ground, they got past Parkinson Old Scholars in the final. However, St. Leonard's was denied the double, as their 47's team went down to St. George Secondary Old scholars, who now have the bragging rights in that division. In light of the recent heavy showers that resulted in pockets of flooding across the island, Barbadians now have another reason to keep their properties and environment clean. Director of the Centre for Biosecurity Studies, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Kirk Douglas says it is important Barbadians keep their properties clean to prevent themselves and loved ones from being infected with mosquito-borne viruses. Many of the island’s youth innovators have been encouraged to pave a path towards a sustainable and greener Barbados. Director of Youth Affairs Cleviston Hunte made the call on Monday during his remarks at the inaugural Barbados Youth Green Tech Expo, held at Hilton Barbados Resort. Coinciding on Caribbean Youth Day 2024, the Barbados Youth Green Tech Expo was aimed to inspire and empower youth to address the environmental challenges faced by Small Island Developing States.
