Another data breach has been reported - this time it relates to the debit Mastercards issued by the Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union Limited. The BPWCCUL has informed some of its customers via email that one of its service providers has recently brought to its attention a potential security breach. While not identifying the service provider, the correspondence goes on to say: "Your card information was used at an online merchant by non-authorised persons to request fraudulent payment authorisation. This activity was investigated and reported by our provider and confirmed as a data privacy breach." The credit union adds the information affected includes the debit card number, expiration date and the card validation code 2 or CVC2, which is the three-digit security code at the back of the card. It says the service provider will block the debit Mastercards, if suspicious transactions are detected. It also says it is in the process of issuing customers replacements for the compromised cards. Customers are advised to monitor their accounts and to report any unusual or suspicious activity. According to the BPWCCUL, the Data Protection Commissioner has been notified about the breach, in accordance to Section 63 of the Barbados Data Protection Act 2019. This data breach comes days after the Barbados Revenue Authority revealed it's online vehicle registration system was hacked. The credit union also issued a statement late this evening. Chief Marketing and Member/Customer Experience Officer, Gail Best-Niles said the email was sent to all customers in error. She said it was intended for a small number of affected card holders.
