Barbadian songwriters are being encouraged to utilise elements of the island's culture when writing and producing music pieces. Head of Publishing at United Kingdom-based DWB Music Ltd, Greig Watts says this is important since music lovers on the international market are always looking for lyrics and beats they have never heard before. Mr. Watts was speaking at the final leg of the National Cultural Foundation's International Songwriting Camp. Participant, Singer and Songwriter Casheda Dottin says she is pleased with the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge from established songwriters and producers. The Pan American Health Organisation, PAHO wants Barbados and the Caribbean to urgently accelerate efforts to meet the goal of the 90-70-90 targets to put the world on course to eliminating cervical cancer. PAHO wants 90% of girls vaccinated against human papillomavirus, HPV by age 15; 70 % of women screened by age 35 and again by age 45, and 90 % of people diagnosed with cervical disease treated. Assistant director, Dr. Rhonda Sealy-Thomas acknowledged that while ambitious, the region of the Americas can meet the set targets. She was among the panel for a briefing session titled Cervical Cancer Elimination: Advancing the Call to Action in the Americas.

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism says more comprehensive policy and legislation are required in dealing with the influx of sargassum seaweed, as well as intended solutions. Executive Director, Milton Haughton says the organisation is cognisant of the presence of national frameworks regulating the harvesting of marine algae and plants, noting the seaweed's use must be guided by science. He wants countries to pay attention to the protection of public health and that of the marine eco-system. Barbados has shared before a high level forum on sargassum, the innovative strides made by the island as it confronts influxes of the seaweed. The forum, the 2nd EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference, was held in Grenada. Chief Fisheries Officer, Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox says compressed natural gas was derived from a mix of sargassum seaweed, water from the rum distillery and Black Belly sheep manure. Barbados has suggested a re-look of teaching methods and theories is required. Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw put forward the suggestion during the question and answer segment of a Regional Symposium and Policy Dialogue on Transforming Education. It was hosted by the Caribbean Development Bank in the Cayman Islands. Citing mathematics as an example, Dr. Archer-Bradshaw says many teachers teach the subject in an abstract way. A warning from the Barbados Fire Service to owners of electric vehicles, after the latest fire on the island. The fire resulted in one vehicle being destroyed last night about 7 minutes to 10 at Gun Hill, St. George. This was the third such high-energy battery service fire officials have responded to in the last two weeks. Station Officer with the Bridgetown Fire Station, Roger Bourne is cognisant of the problems that can occur and is urging EV owners to be mindful, especially if their vehicle was in an accident. He has warned these vehicles with high-energy batteries can re-ignite. Investigations continue into a breach at the Barbados Revenue Authority's Vehicle Registration Online Portal. That hack resulted in the personal information of some Barbadians being placed online for sale. The BRA says it's looking into the matter and Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology Marsha Caddle says her Ministry is aware of the data breach. This is not the first time a government entity has had to deal with a cyber incident but the scale of it as reported by online sources has caused some concern. Quick action by a student averted an escalation in violence at Deighton Griffith School when he relieved another student of a cutlass. According to the Ministry of Education, two students were involved in a situation resulting in one student being struck by the other. The ministry says the Barbados Police Service and parents of the students involved were called to the school. Two education officers went to the institution and assisted with the necessary counselling for all involved. However, while thankful there was no major incident, General Secretary of the Barbados Union of Teachers Herbert Gittens says teachers are concerned about the increase of violence in schools. As reports of the incident at Deighton Griffith circulated on social media parents rushed to the school to ensure their children were safe. Some of them who stood outside the gates spoke to members of the media. Barbados is working closely with the Pan American Health Organisation, PAHO, to ensure the island is well prepared for future health emergencies. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. the Most Honourable Kenneth George says work includes enhancing the health infrastructure and improved digital health systems. Dr. George's comments came during the 76th Session of the Regional Committee of World Health Organisation for the Americas in Washington D.C.
