The head of one of the banks involved in the world's first debt-for-climate swap says it's pleased to be a part of the initiative. CIBC Caribbean, along with Scotiabank and RBC Royal Bank agreed to lend the Government of Barbados 600 million dollars. The funds will be used to buy back an approximately equivalent amount in high-cost Government debt at a cheaper interest rate. The savings will be used to pay back a loan to construct a tertiary sewage treatment plant on the south coast. Managing Director of CIBC Caribbean, Donna Wellington, spoke about the initiative during a signing ceremony at Ilaro Court. The United Kingdom is lending a helping hand by injecting millions of dollars into strengthening regional security. UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy says the new Labour government will be contributing £27 million to the region, to build up law enforcement intelligence gathering capabilities in the northern and eastern Caribbean. He says this financial assistance will give law enforcement officials the tools to take on criminals and support public campaigns to discourage individuals from turning to violence. Mr. Lammy adds the UK will also be giving £5 million specifically to the One Caribbean Fund, to strengthen institutions like CARICOM and the Regional Security System. The best of the island's young footballers were on show as the various age group finals of the 2024 BFA Guardian Group Youth Tournament were held at the BFA Technical Center at Wildey. Rum producers in Barbados and the region are looking for new markets amid concerns about trade instability. The revelation from Chief Executive Officer of the West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA) Vaughan Renwick. He says they are also worried about the possible threats posed by the new US administration. Coleridge and Parry are overall champions of the 2024 Joseph Payne Memorial Field Events Competition. Competing in the five-school event on their home field at Ashton Hall today, CP totalled 319 points, with 167 to win the boys' section and 152 for second place among the girls'. Alleyne, who captured the girls' title with 187 points, was second overall with 297, while St. George Secondary finished third overall with 284 which included third amongst the females with 132. Management and staff of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council have been challenged to be agents of change in response to the evolving job market. Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Kay McConney, made this call during her remarks at the TVET Council’s 30th anniversary gala and awards ceremony, held at Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle Resort on Sunday evening. McConney emphasised the Council’s responsibility to sustain a well-performing system that meets national and regional demands while encouraging them to embrace change in order to address the shifting needs of the labour market.
