There's growing concern about the threatened strike at US sea ports by the International Longshoremen's Association and the severe effects it could have on Barbadian businesses and consumers. Two more private sector associations have added their voices to the warning already issued by the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry. One of them is the Transportation Intermediaries of Barbados, whose President Norman Rice has detailed what would happen if the industrial action takes place. He also said even before this threat loomed they had advised customers to implement measures that, if adopted, would lessen the impact of the strike. The Barbados Manufacturers Association's Executive Director Shardae Boyce has also been highlighting the issue. 130 million dollars has been approved by Government for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to upgrade its medical equipment. This from Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Wellness Davidson Ishmael. He was speaking at the Cancer Support Services' Annual Conference. Minister Ishmael stated that this investment in equipment will include a machine he believes to be a game changer in the treatment of cancer in Barbados. Mr. Ishmael also stated that according to the most recent survey done by the Barbados National Registry, there were a thousand new cases of people diagnosed with cancer in one year. However, while the number of confirmed cases is alarming, the report also shows the survival rate has also risen, which is positive for the country. Barbados has signalled its commitment to complying with international tax standards, by signing a new agreement. At a ceremony in Paris, France, Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Ryan Straughn, signed the document on behalf of Barbados along with eight other jurisdictions. The "Multilateral Convention to Facilitate the Implementation of the Pillar Two Subject to Tax Rule" seeks to ensure fairer and better international tax arrangements, particularly for developing countries. Minister Straughn highlighted a number of recent legislative changes to Barbados' tax regime. He says the reforms are an important part of the island's efforts to drive investment and build climate and economic resilience. Barbados is collaborating with Howard University to establish a new centre for artificial intelligence, innovation and governance The announcement from Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology Marsha Caddle. She was speaking on the sidelines of a symposium to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Eric Williams' groundbreaking book, Capitalism and Slavery, in Washington D.C., where she delivered the keynote lecture. The event was co-hosted by Howard University and the University of Havana, Cuba. During her address, Minister Caddle said ultimately, the capitalism that drove slavery and every era of industrialisation thereafter has been about wealth extraction. A retired nurse who cared for generations of patients in the UK is Barbados' latest centenarian. Josephine Bailey was the toast of the day as President, Her Excellency the Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason joined family, friends and well-wishers to celebrate her 100th birthday. Ms. Bailey Nee Lockhart, who was born in Dominica, moved to Barbados in 1940 before being accepted for nurse training in the UK during the Windrush period of the 1960s. Daughter, Judith Lockhart says her mother loved carnival in London and was an inspiration to many. Ms. Bailey is a mother of four, a grandmother of nine and a great-grandmother of seven. A recent tragedy, where her first grandson Nicholas Murrell was shot and killed, saw the family paying tribute to him. Murrell was among the three who died in the mass shooting in Nelson Street, The City.
