Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has suggested small states may have to consider pooling investments, as work continues to phase out fossil fuels and increase reliance on renewable energy. Citing the Caribbean as an example, she said opportunities exist for significant capacity in solar, wind and geothermal energy among others. Ms. Mottley was addressing the Global Renewables Summit organised by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Meanwhile, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General on Climate Action and Just Transition, Selwin Hart says more needs to be done to keep the 1.5 degrees threshold pledged in the Paris Agreement to tackle climate change, within reach. He says despite the record deployment of renewables, it is not displacing fossil fuels as fast as the world needs. The dedicated meeting is a new effort to bring urgent attention by leaders for increased action on the growing risk of untreatable infections and of increasing mortality. Ahead of that meeting, Ms. Mottley highlighted the impact of AMR, noting it is already claiming a million lives a year directly and is responsible indirectly for just under four million more. The theme of the meeting is "Investing in the Present and Securing Our Future Together: Accelerating Multi-Sectoral Global, Regional and National Actions to Address Antimicrobial Resistance." The last High-Level Meeting was held by the General Assembly in 2016. Young Barbadians have been advised they can change the public's perception of them through their positive deeds. This from The Lodge School Principal, Stephen Jackman, as the school recognised five outstanding 6th Form students who not only attained academic success, but are being hailed as examples for others to follow. He says the five have started on their journey to make Barbados a better place. The five awardees - Reann Dottin, Mario Ince, Alexis Belgrave, Aaliyah Ollivierre and Kymani Jordan - were rewarded with monetary contributions ranging from $500 to $3000 along with a plaque during an awards ceremony on Wednesday. The Principal encouraged other students to strive to do good and counter the negatives being portrayed about youth. At least one teachers' union is calling for more stringent security measures to be implemented at schools across the island. General Secretary of the Barbados Union of Teachers Herbert Gittens notes this is the second week of the term, and already there have been a number of violent incidents recorded. He says the Union continues to urge the authorities to pay particular attention to security at schools. Mr. Gittens also says from reports received, an incident at Hilda Skeene earlier today involving a parent and a teacher is not a violent one, but rather an aggressive one. However, he urges parents to seek to meet with the school's management to iron out any matters. Communications Consultant with the Ministry of Education Gaynelle Marshall confirms a male parent entered the Ruby, St. Philip learning insitution, and behaved in a manner that left teachers and students feeling threatened. She says police were called in to contain the matter, and the school was closed for the remainder of the day. She highlighted the challenges during a Clinton Global Initiative Annual meeting titled 'Innovating in a Time of Crisis'. Ms. Mottley says she's working for a debt for climate swap to assist in this regard. The Barbadian Leader is also continuing her push for changes to the global financial architecture, to better assist small island developing states on the frontline of the climate crisis.
