Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has signalled her support for an independent panel on evidence for action against anti-microbial resistance, AMR. In 2019, the United Nations Interagency Coordination Group for Antimicrobial Resistance called for three bodies to support global efforts to address AMR. Two of these have already been created - the global leaders group to drive political action and the AMR multi-stakeholder partnership platform, to foster cooperation among diverse AMR stakeholders. The third body, an independent panel, has not yet been established. Ms. Mottley was at the time engaging in a side event at the ongoing UN General Assembly. Barbados has not breached any part of its building code or the international building code. This is according to Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance Dwight Sutherland who sought to clear the air on misinformation in relation to the steel houses being constructed as part of the East/West Project. He says if the steel houses are closely examined, it will be noted that those single houses are fitted with two doors, while the duplexes and quads are fitted with one door. Mr. Sutherland says while the houses may be culturally different, they are once again a topic of discussion on the airwaves. To this end, the Minister notes Section 9.2 (1) Of the proposed Barbados Building Code states there must be access to at least one entrance of a dwelling house. He was speaking during the Barbados Annual Construction and Design Conference. Mr. Sutherland continues that if the travel distance of the houses does not exceed nine metres and the floor area does not exceed 200 square metres, an alternative exit is not required. The Ministry of Housing is working to identify new building designs and innovative building technologies as it seeks to upgrade housing schemes across Barbados. Minister of Housing Dwight Sutherland says they have committed to providing 2000 housing solutions yearly between the public and private sector. He was speaking at the Barbados Annual Construction and Design Conference. Among the new technology being considered is sugarcrete, which is sugarcane bagasse mixed with sand mineral binders to produce bricks that have a carbon footprint six times smaller than traditional bricks. Furthermore, officials are seeking to integrate the autoclaved aerated concrete products into the island's building design and construction practices, with a view to reducing indoor air quality issues. Meanwhile, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education Sandra Husbands says rebuilding the built environment will provide the world with trillions of dollars in gross domestic product. Some parents of students at Alexandra School remain concerned about the rising level of crime among the youth. This after police reports confirm a stabbing incident at the Speightstown, St. Peter School premises. Tonya Mangal, who was collecting her son, says searches should be conducted at every gate to enter schools, and communication should have been sent to parents about this particular incident. Meanwhile, Byron Gibson says he is uncertain that any school can provide an adequate level of security with the vast numbers. He says he was informed of the situation via social media, but he believes that the first concern is to the injured student. A release from the Ministry of Education states the injured party was taken for medical attention after the school was closed at 2 p.m. to allow for a complete investigation. The Ministry says it will continue to monitor the students' progress, and provide the necessary support to students, teachers and staff of the Alexandra School.
