Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is not relenting in her quest for changes to the international financial architecture. Ms Mottley used a high-level pre-summit of the future event organised by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network to push the plight of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in accessing finance. The Bridgetown Initiative 3.0, which was presented for consultation at the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in Antigua and Barbuda was presented to the forum by the Barbadian leader. Unveiled in 2022, the Bridgetown Initiative has sought a paradigm shift in the global discourse on scaling capital flows and reshaping the financing system to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal and spur climate action. The Barbados Workers' Union is tonight expressing disappointment and shock over what appears to be a new hiring regime at Sandals Barbados. General Secretary Toni Moore says that following a recent series of layoffs at the Christ Church hotel, about 18 people have since been engaged and are working in the housekeeping department without contracts. They are being labelled as casual workers and paid at a rate of $400 per week. Additionally, she says other workers, being referred to as self-contractors, are working in the laundry and project departments. Ms. Moore is also calling for the Ministry of Labour to have inspectors investigate the allegations and urges the Ministry of Tourism to stop all concessions with immediate effect if the allegations are found to be true. She is also urging the Barbados Tourism and Hotel Association to stop hiding behind claims of seasonal patterns and focus on what is right. Officials at Sandals could not be reached for comment up to news time. The University of the West Indies has always had innovative ideas but now needs to put them into motion to the benefit of all. This is according to Pro-vice Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus Professor Clive Landis who was speaking following the second iteration of the Cave Hill Innovate! 2024 Competition. He says private sector investment is important in order to scale up. This year participants were asked to develop projects that can either enhance the profitability of the UWI Cave Hill Campus or improve the operational efficiency of the campus in some way. Top prize went to campus quest; second place was captured by the Caribbean Music Assessment Board; and the third place was won by UWI Afro-Caribbean Fashion and Art Academy. The special prize this year was given to Bim Skin. The team competition which was made up of teams involving two to five staff members, saw $60,000 made available to the top three teams to start the business activity. Winners Camille Russell-Thornhill and Geralyn Walkes say their campus-based tour company offers customisable, immersive, gamified tour experiences to participants. Team Lead Ms. Russell-Thornhill says following a number of hikes held by the campus for its 60th anniversary, some people expressed interest in a less passive form of touring. And their tours are both historical and educational for the user. Work has started to repair Prior Park Road in St James. It began on September 11 and will include the placing of sidewalks and wells, as well as milling and paving and the reconstruction of the roundabout. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Santia Bradshaw, says the works fall under the CAF Project. It is being funded by a 50 million dollar loan from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean or CAF. Ms Bradshaw admits there have been many complaints from residents about the disruptions, but explains water mains needed to be replaced before reconstruction could begin. She says contractors are being engaged to design and construct two roads in St Thomas: Shop Hill to Content and Cane Garden to Bridgefield. Ms Bradshaw notes that in order to minimise the disruption to residents during this work, two other roads will be rehabilitated to create alternative routes in and out of the communities.
