Efforts are continuing to bring relief to thousands of St. Peter residents affected by water outages due to a seven inch burst main. Member of Parliament Colin Jordan is reporting that most of those affected have been serviced by tankers from the Barbados Water Authority. However, the Parliamentary Representative is calling on BWA workers manning the tankers not to forget residents located off the main roads. Meanwhile, BWA officials say work to repair the burst main located in a 35 foot gully between Rock Hall and Four Hill, St. Peter has been moving at a slow pace. The BWA is advising that customers and businesses in Four Hill, Four Hill Development, French Village, Indian Ground, Diamond Corner, Boscobelle Terrace, and surrounding areas may continue to be impacted by low-pressure and water outages. A climate activist from Barbados has told a global forum challenges and barriers still exist for young people wanting to have their voices heard on climate change. Ashley Lashley, Founder of the non-profit organisation the Ashley Lashley Foundation, shared how her advocacy and efforts locally have resulted in the creation of one of the largest youth climate and health movements. She wants more support for young people with innovative projects that need funding and support. Ms. Lashley was among the panel for a discussion titled "People, Nature, and Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean", being held in Colombia by the Rockefeller Foundation. Farmers might see a reduced water rate when the Bridgetown Sewage Treatment Plant is finalised in 2026. Word of this from Project Manager at the Barbados Water Authority Shelley Parris. She says they are working with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture to determine what the optimal cost will be to provide water at a reduced rate to those in the agricultural sector. However, she made it clear she did not want to give any specifics in relation to costs. Ms. Parris was speaking during a town hall meeting at St. Mary's Church. Meanwhile, National Project Coordinator of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre Dr. Elon Cadogan says along with the upgrade, there will be an increased capacity from 30,000 to 40,000 customers serviced by the plant. Cultural artistes on the island stand to benefit as Government announces plans to set up a Jackie Opel Legacy Lab as it plays its part in ensuring the legacy of the creator of Spouge lives on. The announcement was made by Minister in the Prime Minister's Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight during a Jackie Opel Concert in Golden Square Freedom Park as the Season of Emancipation came to a close. The programme is set to be launched next week. Senator Munro-Knight provided insight into how the initiative will work. Senator Munro-Knight, meanwhile, expressed confidence the Season of Emancipation has assisted in building national consciousness. She says significant dates important to Barbados' history and future were commemorated during the period.

A massive crowd was on hand for the opening night if the Prime Minister's Cup competition at Friendship. By the end of the final whistle Deacons and Parish Land registered victories as the hunt for the top prize of $100,000 is underway. The competition continues tomorrow at Gall Hill in St. John. Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Kevin Greenidge is advising children they can become anything they want to be in life once they dream big and work hard. Dr. Greenidge, who endured hardships as a child, says children who experience challenges can look to brighter tomorrows. He says setting goals, staying positive, working hard, helping others and looking forward to a bright future is the recipe to achieving success. The Governor made the comments to recipients of the Barbados Association of Professional Social Workers third annual Resilience Awards. While stressing the importance of helping others, Dr. Greenidge commended the association for establishing the Resilience Awards for children who overcame several challenges to sit the 2024 Common Entrance examination. This year 12 students from different primary schools received trophies and tangible support. The social workers will also be providing mentorship to the students throughout the first three years of their secondary school journey. Today is being celebrated as Jackie Opel Day in Barbados. Born Dalton Bishop, Jackie Opel was a singer/composer and known as the creator of spouge music. He would have turned 86 today. To celebrate his achievements a free concert is being held at the Golden Square Freedom Park tonight. Some of the island's favourite artistes will be on stage with new arrangements as efforts continue to keep his memory alive. Entertainer Desmond Weekes is among those who will be paying tribute. Speaking on Mornin' Barbados he said he was pleased with the interest being shown by young people in reviving the indigenous artform. Also performing is entertainer Simon Pipe. The battle lines have been drawn and over 20 chefs and mixologists are ready to compete in this year's Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association's National Culinary Competition. From the pool of three junior chefs, 11 senior chefs, four pastry chefs and six mixologists, four will be selected to compete at this year's Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association's Taste of the Caribbean Competition which comes off in November, in Miami, Florida.
