A 39-year-old man had to be freed from a vehicle using the jaws of life after he was involved in an accident in Lears, St. Michael. Reports indicate a flatbed truck careened off the carriageway and collided with a lorry, trapping the driver of the flatbed truck inside the vehicle. Acting Leading Fire Officer Junior Foster says at 4:00 p.m. a team at the Bridgetown Port Station received a call from their dispatch centre informing of the collision. He says the victim complained of back pain and pain in the right knee. Several of the fancied men's players in the Barbados Road Tennis Open 2024 made it through to the round of 16 in the tournament from the Gall Hill, St. John leg. Former world number one Julian "Michael Jackson" White defeated Dwight Thornhill 21-10, 21-16. Davien "Force Ripe " Taylor also brushed aside Edwin Ward 21-6, 21-14. Dario Hinds stopped Deighton "Pa " Roach 21-14, 21-18 ; while Darius "Barrackus" Gaskin was simply too strong for Brandon Arrindell brushing him aside 21-9, 21-10. Meanwhile, former Barbados Open Women's Champion Kim Holder is also through to the round of 16. Holder was among the winners when the ladies' action was on the court at Silver Hill in Christ Church. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has been explaining the importance of the establishment of the National Botanical Gardens at in St. Michael. She spoke about the designated area during a tree planting ceremony there with former First Lady of South Africa, Her Excellency Dame Graça Machel, as a symbol of cementing her visit to the island as it culminates today. The Prime Minister stressed that green spaces are needed for recreation and other purposes. Ms. Mottley added that the importance of the area also relates to government's intention to build out infrastructure to support the creative industry in barbados. As in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup, Pelican Village once again will be transformed into a fan zone - this time for the Barbados Royals Women's and Men's teams for the Caribbean Premier League. At the zone's launch recently, CEO of Pelican Village Mark Hill revealed that one of the main features will be a virtual cricket game. The fan engagement drive began with a roadshow on Saturday and the Barbados Royal cricketers Nyeem Young, Kevin Wickham and Rahkeem Cornwall are looking forward to engaging with their fans. All the Barbados Royals games will be shown in the zone. The Women are playing in Trinidad with the remainder of their games tonight, tomorrow, and if they make the final - on the 29th. The Royals men will start their campaign in Antigua and Barbuda against the host franchise the Falcons on September 1. They then return home to face the Falcons on September 11 at Kensington Oval, followed by the Trinbago Knight Riders on the 13th, Guyana Amazon Warriors on the 14th and the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots on the 17th. The Men's CPL final is set for October 6. The late Honourable Rudolph Nathaniel Greenidge was remembered as a humble, community-focused individual who was deeply committed to his family as he was laid to rest today. Among the dignitaries present were President of Barbados, The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, along with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and her Cabinet, Speaker of the House Arthur Holder, and President of The Senate Honourable Reginald Farley. Officials at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital are expected to get the first drawdown of $65 million, out of its $130 million dollar Capital Expenditure Programme within a number of weeks. And the first order of business is to order new pieces of equipment and to build the hospital's capacity over the next few months. This is according to Director of Engineering Paula Agbowu who was speaking on today's Pulse radio show on Q100.7 F.M. Ms. Agbowu notes the QEH has a listing of 19,126 pieces of equipment; 7,000 of which are medical and over 12,000 listed as non-medical. She adds the hospital is set to acquire a new linear accelerator that will be used to treat oncology cases. They hope to have it operational by year-end as some infrastructural work also needs to take place first. There's support for new legislation which makes it harder for people who commit murder and firearm offences to get bail. Former magistrate Faith Marshall-Harris says the amendment to the Bail Act is one solution to curbing the spate of gun violence on the island. Ms. Marshall-Harris says speedier trials to prevent people from being out on bail or on remand for extended periods is another solution to maintaining law and order in Barbados. The Barbados Road Safety Association has raised its concerns regarding potential disputes following a motor vehicle accident and the role of accident responders versus the police. President Roland Lowe, who is a former police officer, queried if insurance personnel are trained in this regard as he weighed in on the change in the Road Traffic Accident Investigation Policy. He was on the panel for CBC TV's The People's Business. The topic, is the new Road Traffic Investigation Policy: A Different Response to Accidents. In response, Police Communication and Public Affairs Officer Inspector Rodney Inniss says the insurance reponders underwent a 40-hour one-week training course in Accident Scene Management. He says that initial training is appropriate, given that the responders will be handling minor accidents or so-called fender benders. As it relates to tensions rising at the scene, he adds that police will respond. Police are on the scene of an accident at Six Roads, St. Philip where a vehicle overturned, pinning the driver inside. When CBC's Wendy Burke arrived on the scene around 10:45 a.m., public-spirited citizens were offering assistance, attempting to get the male driver out of the vehicle. The passenger of the vehicle was inconsolable at the scene. Police on the scene moved to secure the area.
