Close to 500 families have benefitted from much needed assistance with back to school supplies, just in time for the new school term. It comes through the Eden Lodge Youth Charitable Trust, which has provided help in acquiring school books, uniforms, bags and shoes and the paying of petty fees for secondary school children. President and Chief Executive Officer, Dwayne Grazette says over 494 children have been assisted. He says these families face different challenges. The budget for the Trust's back to school programme is around 400 thousand dollars. Mr. Grazette says the initiative is important as he urged continued investments in young Barbadians. 2024 marks 30 years for the Eden Lodge Charitable Trust's back to school programme. Public Relations Officer, Billie June-Langdon says thousands of families have received assistance over those years. The Frank Collymore Literary Endowment competition continues to play a part in the development of literary arts and artistes on island. The awards, which started in 1988, recognise individuals for literary achievement during the past year. The endowment is supported by the Central Bank of Barbados. Creative Producer and Cultural Consultant, Ayesha Gibson-Gill says there have been many success stories from winners. Her comments came on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. Chairperson Yvonne Weekes revealed the Spoken Word competition has been included for a second year. This, she says, will be separate from the Writing competition. Hundreds of young Barbadians have benefitted from training and have secured employment through Government's Job Start Plus Programme. It was introduced for young Barbadians 16 to 24 years by the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Third Sector, to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers. Programme Officer with the Ministry, Moreen Bowen revealed some 450 people were trained since the initiative's introduction in 2019. Overall she says there have been good responses, not only from young people, but also from the Programme's partners. The Job Start Plus Programme is set to welcome its latest cohort come November. Programme Assistant, Diante Collymore says training, which will be provided for two weeks, covers a range of topics, including time management and resume writing. Mr. Collymore himself is a product of the initiative. West Indies will host South Africa in a three-match T20 international series starting this afternoon at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago. This will be the third time for year that the teams will face each other. The Windies first won the T20 series prior to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup but then lost to the proteas at the Super Eight stage of the big event that was hosted in the Caribbean. Windies Vice Captain Roston Chase says it is time to settle the score. West Indies have won four of their last five T20 series and in the ICC Men's T20 team rankings, they are ranked fourth, while South Africa are fifth. Windies Skipper Rovman Powell emphasised what Coach Daren Sammy had said earlier this week that the building process for the 2026 T20 World has already begun. More youth are showing an interest in climate change and disaster preparedness. And in an effort to help them gain the necessary knowledge and skill set, the Department of Emergency Management is hosting a major youth summer event on August 30 as a part of its public awareness initiative. DEM's Programme Officer Simon Alleyne says the event titled High Winds Rough Seas is another youth-centred programme. Additionally, he says the event will have a number of water-themed attractions and urges those who will be attending to walk with a change of clothes. Minister of Labour, Social Security, and Third Sector, Colin Jordan is encouraging employers to use laying off workers as a last resort. On the heels of more than 200 workers at Sandals being made redundant, Mr. Jordan tells CBC News workers are not pieces of equipment that can be put down, but are human beings whose overall needs and commitments must be considered. Mr. Jordan is also asking employers to work with the trade union movement to examine their operations before making critical decisions that would affect livelihoods. Insurance officials want the problem of people driving uninsured vehicles dealt with. Chief Executive Officer of Co-operators General Insurance, Anton Lovell, is asking the Barbados Police Service to handle the situation. He says this is necessary as a new Road Traffic Accident Investigation Policy is expected to come into effect next month. He was speaking at a press briefing where details about the new policy were unveiled. Further, Mr. Lovell says insurance companies want to see uninsured vehicles involved in accidents towed away and impounded.
