The newly formed St. Andrew Development Commission wants Government to revisit the Belleplaine Community Plan. Co-founder and Director of the Commission, Selena King shared how it could benefit the parish. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in response welcomed the suggestion. She says potential also exists for heritage trails. The Prime Minister says by having community groups onboard, the country will benefit. The delivery of garbage trucks ordered by Barbados has been delayed. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley assured the country the trucks have already been paid for, as she responded to concerns about garbage collection from residents of St. Andrew during last evening's Parish Speaks at the Alleyne School. She says in addition to vehicles already procured, the Government will ensure the Sanitation Service Authority secures additional trucks to service the country. Ms. Mottley addressed another bugbear for residents relating to public transportation, stating buses will be coming in six months time. A new programme is providing the opportunity for Barbadians, particularly young people, to expand their knowledge regarding financial and social security services. It's being made possible through the Community Engagement and Educational Programme, being spearheaded by the Community Development Department. Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith, says the initiative will help young people better prepare for the world of work. He was addressing the launch of the programme, at the Valley Resource Centre, Glebe, St. George. Acting Chief Community Development Officer Kay Hinds says through the three month programme, experts from financial and social agencies will make key knowledge and services relevant to members of the public within communities. The Faith Marshall-Harris/Sandy Lane Charitable Trust Help Line is seeing an increase in the number of people asking for help to send their children back to school. Founder of the help line Faith Marshall-Harris today donated thousands to S. Abed and Co. Ltd., for the benefit of children from vulnerable families. While making the presentation at Abeds in Swan Street, she noted the students range from nursery to the secondary school level. Managing Director of Abeds, Eddy Abed says with the increase in requests annually, more corporate entities ought to join the cause in getting the nation's children back to school. Sports Minister Charles Griffith says the delay in the construction of the National Statium is no fault of Government. He says the contractor provided by the Chinese is responsible for both the demolition and construction and as soon as one is identified by China, the team will be on the island to work. The Minister also noted he is set to work alongside the Barbados Olympic Association to create a four-year plan, where athletes will be geared to excel at the regional and international levels. The Democratic Labour Party may resolve its internal conflict at the upcoming 69th Annual Conference where a resolution might be passed to elect a new president and general secretary. This possibility was disclosed during a press conference yesterday at the party’s George Street, Belleville, St Michael headquarters to launch the August 23-25 conference. Acting president Andre Worrell said that while resolutions were in place to address the ongoing issues, the process remained under the control of the General Council until the annual conference. A historic moment for Barbados women’s tennis team as they gained promotion into the Americas Group ll of the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup competition. After contesting four unbeaten matches in Pool A of the group stages and advancing into the playoff against El Salvador, Barbados pulled off a hard fought 2-1 victory at the National Racquet Centre in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday and produced their greatest performance to date since competing in the Billie Jean Cup from its inception in 1993. The four-member team comprising national top seed Gabrielle Leslie, Hannah Chambers, Serena Bryan and Cherise Slocombe all showed tremendous resilience as they fought consistently and won against Antigua and Barbuda (3-0), Jamaica (2-1), Bahamas (3-0) and Trinidad and Tobago (2-1) in the group stages. The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation was in winners row, copping two awards at the 35th Caribbean Media Awards. Myles Eversley, Joshua Hinkson and Sherwood McCaskie captured the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre's Best Climate Change Documentary Award for their production, "Info Insight: Rum and Sargassum". The Financial Literacy Journalism Television Award went to Stacey Russell for her item "NewsPulse Episode 4: Financial Health with Exchange Museum". Ms. Russell also received a special mention in the Best Television Producer category. That award however was secured by Khadene Foote of RJR Gleaner Communications Group in Jamaica. The awards were collected on the winners' behalf by CBC's Jo-anne Sealy. The Government Information Service along with Starcom Network also copped awards during the ceremony in Belize. President of the CBU, Dr. Claire Grant says the awards come at a time when there are concerns about the many challenges to human content producers from artificial intelligence. She says the awards showcase the best of Caribbean media content. Government is seeking to start 100 youth groups. This announcement is coming from Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith who says the Barbados Youth Development Council will be responsible for guiding them. Mr. Griffith spoke about the plans to establish the new groups during the ribbon cutting ceremony for the BYDC and CARICOM Youth Ambassadors' Space, at Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael. He adds the 55-year-old Council being housed at the Ministry will redound to the benefit of the island's youth. Visitors to the Ministry will also be treated to new signage. Minister Griffith says the new signs, placed in various areas, will encourage young people to feel empowered when they visit. China continues to deepen its economic ties with Barbados with the introduction of one of its vehicles here over the weekend. The Tank 500 SUV, manufactured by Chinese company Great Wall Motors, was launched for the first time in the region on Saturday by local distributors Caribbean Automotive Retailers at Haymans Market in St Peter. Chinese Ambassador to Barbados Yan Xiusheng was among the officials attending the event. He said GWM was one of the top ten Chinese automobile manufacturers with more than one million vehicles sold globally in 2023. Video by Reco Moore.
Fresh off the commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, efforts continue locally to debunk myths as health officials promote breastfeeding. The week was observed from August 1 to 7 under the theme "Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All". Registered Nurse and Midwife in the Labour Ward of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Nakeisha Scantlebury reiterated breastfeeding is best given the many benefits for the infant. She revealed some mothers shy away from breastfeeding over fears it will alter the appearance of their breasts. Ms. Scantlebury was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. Fellow Registered Nurse and Midwife, Krystal Holder says classes are being offered by the Antenatal Clinic to assist mothers. After outreach and education campaigns, some employers on the island are enthusiastic about the National Workplace Wellness Policy. The policy was approved in 2019 and has been fully operational since 2021. Senior Lecturer of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Dwayne Devonish, who prepared the policy, says many are eager to learn about how it coalesces with the Safety and Health at Work legislation. He notes aside from physical wellness, the National Workplace Policy covers nine dimensions, including psychological or mental wellness. He says this addresses the psychological turmoil employees are facing.
