Small farmers are having a problem selling some of the excess poultry they are producing. This is the word from President of the Barbados Egg and Poultry Producers Association, Stephen Layne. Speaking in an interview with CBC News, he said some small farmers are feeling the weight of having to store their excess produce in commercial freezers. Mr. Layne says most small farmers have come to a realisation that a freezer will be needed to combat these high storage fees. Meanwhile, CEO of the Barbados Agricultural Society, James Paul, says there is a need for the organisation to have more accurate information, is it to make better decisions. He says the BAS will be looking at putting on marketing programmes to help some farmers. However, Mr. Paul is encouraging farmers to continue being innovative in the way they go about their marketing to generate sales. Residents in Bristol Road, Cave Hill, St. Michael are cleaning up after themselves with the help of Island Skip Services. Impressed with the efforts of the residents, the company has entered into a public/private initiative starting in Cave Hill. The intention is to go into other communities across the island to ensure residents can discard of their bulk waste from now until Christmas. Communications Consultant with Haigh Communications Joy-Ann Haigh says she noticed the pile of garbage and an influx of mosquitoes on one of her visits. She spoke to some residents who said they needed help and the idea was birthed. Skips will be delivered to communities on Fridays and collected on Mondays, giving residents the entire weekend to rid themselves of waste. Ms. Haigh believes communities can help by taking responsibility for their actions. Meanwhile, resident Gale Greenidge says the clean up is an excellent idea and should be duplicated across the island. A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Barbados Manufacturers Association and a new e-commerce platform, Corner Store. The signing occurred during the 60th anniversary celebration of the BMA at Haymans Market last night. The initiative will allow Barbadians across the diaspora to get Barbadian manufactured products within two business days. Founder Teddy Leon says the platform will be membership-based, and will ensure that manufacturers meet national and international standards through its partnership with the BMA. He adds they also have a new foothold in the manufacturing industry in Trinidad and Tobago. Mr. Leon says they will also be a raw material aggregator which will allow for the purchase of raw materials at a discounted price, which will in turn allow the customer base to benefit.
