A contingent of 12 junior Barbados squash players will compete in this weekend's Canadian Junior Open. Dubbed the most prestigious international junior squash tournament, held annually in Canada, the young players will compete from the Under-11 to Under-19 divisions. Among them will be players from the Uplands Squash Club, and when CBC Sports caught up with them before their departure from the Grantley Adams International Airport, Coach Lilianna White said they expect the competition to be of a very high standard. The Canadian Junior Squash Open serves off today and runs through to Tuesday. Barbadians are being asked to remember those living with HIV/AIDS facing discrimination and other issues. This appeal is coming from Minister in the Prime Minister's Office with Responsibility for Culture Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight who is calling on citizens to take responsibility for vulnerable people in their communities. She was delivering remarks during the opening of the Division of Culture's Health Expo and Presentation to the Food Bank to commemorate World Aids Day 2024. Minister Munro-Knight says the 34 food vouchers valued at $100 each are as a result of a fundraising initiative undertaken by the Division last year. Meanwhile, Director of the National Wellbeing & HIV Commission Lynn Armstrong is thanking the Division of Culture for its unwavering support and commitment. The Commission's annual Love Safely Literary competition, which is in its fifth year, will be launched soon. Barbadians have no need to fear at this time, the flu which is impacting the Democratic Republic of Congo. Health officials say the mystery flu which claimed 143 lives in the Congo is not in Barbados. Dr. The most honourable Kenneth George says Barbados' surveillance system will capture any anomalies. He has also made it clear Caribbean health partners are also assisting in the prevention process. Dr. George says the ministry of health will continue to monitor the international situation, because with the movement of people comes the movement of disease. Local artistes are being embraced in the effort to address gender-based violence. Lecturer and Head of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at the Nita Barrow Unit of UWI Cave Hill, Dr. Tonya Haynes says these professionals are key to social change and transformation. To this end, several have teamed up with the Bureau of Gender Affairs in the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs and the Nita Barrow Unit for an event focused on drawing more attention to the issue. It is dubbed "Arts For Activism: A Cultural Production on Gender-Based Biolence", part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. The public will be entertained through music, poetry, dance, and other live performances during the event, which is set for tomorrow in Golden Square Freedom Park. Soca artiste, Michael "Mikey" Mercer says gender-based violence needs attention, and wants other artistes to lend their voice to the cause. The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has produced a generative artificial intelligence or AI policy for regional secondary education. Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Wayne Wesley revealed CXC is in the process of fine-tuning the policy. The announcement was made during the 2024 CXC Regional Top Awards Ceremony held in St. Lucia. According to Dr. Wesley, CXC will engage in multiple stakeholder consultations on the policy so it can be adopted and effectively implemented across schools in the Caribbean. This year's most outstanding candidates overall in CAPE and CSEC examinations were Aniyah Couchman and Dave Chowtie, both from Queen's College, Guyana. Couchman achieved Grade I in 20 subjects and Grade II and Grade III in one subject each. Chowtie achieved Grade I in 25 subjects and Grade II in 4 subjects. As the top students were awarded, Dr. Wesley noted CXC is aiming for greater success for more of its regional candidates. He says it's not beyond states in the region to have their citizens literate and digitally prepared to take their place in the world. Remedial works and industrial cleaning to correct environmental issues at Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary School will be completed by tomorrow. That's according to Chairman of the Board George Griffith who says testing to ensure the environmental issues that led to the school being closed during the first week of the 2024-2025 school year, no longer exist. He tells CBC News testing is absolutely necessary to satisfy all involved that the school is ready to be reopened for the resumption of face-to-face classes. Mr. Griffith adds while the remedial work has been for an extended period, the Board is being guided by the recommendations of the professional remedial team. He says the Board's priority will always be the safety of students and staff.
