Vendors are beginning to report a significant drop in fish sales, even for the traditional off-peak season, after Hurricane Beryl smashed a significant number of fishing vessels in Barbados. They are now relying, mostly, on frozen stocks in order to ply their trade, since the category four hurricane passed to the south of the island on July 1st. Some, like Jemma Harris, selling at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex, are encouraging consumers not to shy away from buying frozen fish, noting it's been quite slow recently. A local criminologist is suggesting people, especially those in lower socio-economic groups, are being lured into crime. Kim Ramsay says while poverty is not a cause of crime, it is a risk factor. She was a guest on the current affairs programme, 'The People's Business', on CBC TV8. Ms. Ramsay says at least 70% of the prison population does not have academic qualifications. She also notes 68% of inmates have re-offended, because of the challenges they face on release. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Children's Rights Advocate Faith Marshall-Harris is reminding doctors that they have a mandatory obligation to report any instances of child abuse to the director of the child protection authority. Ms. Marshall-Harris says medical practitioners usually report such instances of abuse even if they only suspected the nefarious act. She says thereafter, a doctor's responsibility continues through to administering treatment or becoming an expert witness in court matters as they are duty bearers. She was speaking during her presentation on the Child Protection Act at a Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners conference at the Courtyard by Marriott.
