Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne has called on Government to introduce anti-gang legislation in response to the surge in homicides across Barbados. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says efforts must be made to secure the next generation as Barbados and the region has a problem with non-communicable diseases. The foundation has introduced several programmes geared towards assisting in the fight, including the push for front-of-packaging warning labels. Programme Manager, Childhood Obesity Prevention Programme, Francine Charles, speaking on Mornin' Barbados, says there's been a focus globally on protecting children. Ms. Charles says support from stakeholders is critical. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is reporting a positive response to its 'Pulse' radio show as it narrows the communication gap between the facility and Barbadians. Communication Specialist Shane Sealy says the groundbreaking show is providing answers about health concerns to many. Non-governmental and religious organisations are united in support of the call for citizens to pause for five minutes on Saturday, in a symbolic gesture of national unity and peace-making. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley made the appeal as the island grapples with a crime surge. During a recent national address, the Prime Minister made it clear the authorities will not surrender to a handful of individuals who seek to cause panic in the country. President of the Power of Choice Incorporated, Errol Griffith acknowledge that though some are not impacted directly, crime is having its effect. He believes core values are needed that will guide the nation. Mr. Griffith was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is on board with the venture. National Communication Director Kathie Daniel says action must be taken to bring peace to Barbados and help those struggling. 26 athletes departed the island Wednesday to represent Barbados at the International Karate Daigaku 4th World Cup, and Grand Benefit Gala in Georgetown Guyana. The athletes will be joined by six officials for the event which will run to the 21st of July, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Manager Corey Greaves says the team should be very competitive. Both Shannan Skeete and Joseph Tseu will be competing in the adult 20-39 category and say they are aiming for a podium position. In response to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley's recent national address, Ms. Moore underscored the profound impact that violence and crime have on workplaces. She emphasized the pervasive nature of violence and its effects on productivity, mental wellness, and the overall work environment. The BWU General Secretary called for a concerted effort from both employers and workers to foster a culture of transparency and understanding. Ms Moore also highlighted the BWU's commitment to investing in education on soft skills such as conflict resolution and effective communication. She stressed that addressing issues at the interpersonal level before they escalate to formal grievances is crucial. The community of Welchman Hall, St Thomas hosted Cartdooment earlier today. Cartdooment or Kadooment in the cart road, took place in Welchman Hall and Vault Road and attracted about 40 children. It was the brainchild of Lisa Walcott. She previously did a Spelling Bee on Sundays with the children, and after taking a break for three weeks, wanted an activity to get their attention.
