Non-Governmental and religious organizations are united in support of the call for citizens to pause for five minutes on Saturday, in a symbolic gesture of national unity and peace-making. Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley made the appeal as the island grapples with a crime surge. During a recent national address, the Prime Minister made it clear the authorities will not surrender to a handful of individuals who seek to cause panic in the country. President of the Power of Choice Incorporated, Errol Griffith, acknowledges though some are not impacted directly, crime is having its effect. He believes core values are needed that will guide the nation. Mr. Griffith was a guest on CBC TV8's Mornin' Barbados. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is also on board with the venture. National Communication Director, Kathy Daniel says action must be taken to bring peace to Barbados and help those struggling. The Barbados Water Authority has seen an increase in the number of delinquent customers in recent months. In fact, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight, says the agency is only able to cover 96 per cent of its overhead costs. She was speaking during a debate on a Resolution to approve the borrowing of 12.4 million US dollars from the Caricom Development Fund. The money will be used to co-finance and augment the 3Rs, that is reduce, reuse and recycle, for the climate-resilient wastewater systems project. The loan has a fixed interest rate of three per cent per annum and will be repaid over 12 years, with a two-year grace period. Senator Dr. Munro-Knight is stressing the importance of customers paying their bills. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley yesterday implored friends, family and colleagues of the late Sir Philip Serrao to remember him “as one of those who stood tall in building this nation and in making lives easier for each and everyone that he could”. Paying tribute to the late Barbadian patriot at his funeral service at St Mary’s Anglican Church in The City, the Prime Minister said: “This morning I stand not simply out of duty but out of a deep sense of loss for a man who has been a giant literally, in the lives of so many of us and in the institutions of so many across our country.” She acknowledged Sir Philip’s 15 years of “distinguished, unbroken service” as chairman of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission, as well as his devoted service to the Barbados Labour Party. The annual National Sports Council (NSC) summer camp has expanded its range of offerings this year. In addition to new disciplines of cheerleading and gymnastics, the camp, which started yesterday at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, will also include a life skills programme with workshops on anti-bullying, teamwork and leadership. Camp coordinator Tracey Leacock said the intention was to make it a more holistic experience.(Video by Reco Moore)

Barbados Olympic bronze medalist Obadele Thompson believes quarter miler Sada Williams will create history and win the island's second Olympic medal when she competes at the Paris 2024 Games starting on July 26. During an exclusive interview with CBC Sports, Thompson, who won Barbados' first individual Olympic medal - a bronze in the men's 100 meters at the Sydney 2000 Games, says Williams has shown that she is capable of a podium finish. Meanwhile, Williams says she has her eyes set on a top spot and a new national record ahead of the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Williams is set to compete in the women's 400 metre event and is the island's biggest medal hopeful. The Government has strengthened its capacity and leadership in the digital space. The disclosure from Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology, Marsha Caddle, as she addressed the audience during the Catapult Technology Summit held under the theme 'We Gatherin: Support Beyond the Screen'. Minister Caddle participated in the summit which was organised by the Ministry and involved information technology teams across Government and local technology developers. She also explained how a partnership with the Barbados Defence Force is set to strengthen Government's cyber security efforts. We also learned during the summit, the appointment of software engineer, entrepreneur and finance expert Mark Boyce as Chief Executive Officer of GovTech Barbados Ltd. GovTech is the Government agency established to improve public sector modernisation efforts. A local trade unionist has described Government's proposed serious organised crime unit as a potential waste of resources. General Secretary of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) Dennis de Peiza says the proposed unit is likely to duplicate the work already being done by specially trained police officers. He says instead, Government should be injecting the Barbados Police Service with additional manpower and resources. Mr. de Peiza was addressing a press conference this morning. Mr. de Peiza is also calling on law enforcement officials to track the sources of illegal firearms coming into the country. The Opposition Democratic Labour Party has withheld its support for the Notaries Public Bill 2024. Senator Tricia Watson announced the stance as she again raised her concern over the time given for notice of bills. She told the Upper House that passing legislation is no joke as she called for seriousness in the Senate. Senator Watson and her opposition counterpart Ryan Walters indicated they would play no further part in today's Debate. It was at this point the Opposition Senators were seen packing up. Their seats were noticeably vacant by the end of the next Speaker's presentation. This in turn prompted a response from Deputy President of the Senate, Her Honour Elizabeth Thompson. She's criticised their decision to walk out of the chamber. She notes it's the Opposition's responsibility to use the resources available to it as a political party, to prepare. The Barbados Manufacturers Association (BMA) is supporting its members in their commitment to upholding high production standards and maintaining good public health practices. Consumers are being assured that most local manufacturers adhere to strict production standards with several producers, achieving international accreditation, and meeting the required quality control best practices. President of the BMA Rakeesh Bernard says that while on occasion there may be areas of concern, local manufacturers are competing and producing on an international level. Meanwhile, Executive Director Shardae Boyce outlined some of the ongoing training offered to local manufacturers. Barbados is expanding the category of notaries public. Through the Notaries Public Bill, 2024 that was brought before the Senate for Debate, ordinary citizens were able to join the group. Under the Legislation, the notary public will serve the public in non-contentious matters, and authenticate documents related to immigration/marriage, and other areas. Leader of Government Business and Minister of Energy and Business, Senator Lisa Cummins says it's all part of efforts to ease doing business in Barbados and making services more accessible to the public.
