Six Barbadians are among the close to 50 exceptional caribbean lawyers whose contributions to regional development have been chronicled in a compelling book of essays. The book launched by the Caribbean Court of Justice's Academy for Law is titled, 'Legendary Caribbean Legal Practitioners'. The Barbadians include Sir Richard Cheltenham, Sir Henry Forde and Sir David Simmons. A documentary video called 'Legendary Caribbean Legal Practitioners' has also been compiled, showcasing the chosen 48 caribbean lawyers. Chairman of the CCJ Academy of Law, Justice Winston Anderson, says focus has been placed on those whose exploits in the courtrooms have moved beyond excellence, and into the pages of history. President of the CCJ, Justice Adrian Saunders says the final list is impressive, comprising a reasonable regional spread. This upcoming weekend will be a big one for the island's juniors, as Barbados gears up to host Junior Kadooment and the Scotiabank Junior Monarch finals on Saturday. The National Botanical Gardens will form the backdrop for the two events. Producer of the Junior Monarch competition, Kevin Moore, says the competitors are ready and today is the final day of performing ahead of the big day. Patrons have been promised a lovely show. Efforts to boost Barbados' dwindling population were the focus of debate in the Lower House today. Among the possible solutions being considered is importing skilled workers. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says managed migration is one of the recommendations to grow the population. It is one of three measures outlined in the Barbados Population Policy 2023, debated in Parliament. Ms. Mottley says giving citizenship to Barbadian descendants is another suggestion on the table, to increase the population. She says the third recommendation is for Barbadians to have more children. Barbados' under-21 national netball team is back on home soil after qualifying for the Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar next year. Sir Philip Serrao was remembered as a larger-than-life figure who was committed to service and barbados. Barbadians from all walks of life, from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and Government officials joined his family in paying their final goodbyes during his funeral service at the St. Mary's Anglican Church. Sir Philip, an attorney at law and former Chairman of the Electoral and Boundaries passed away at his home on July 5, at the age of 78 years. Prime Minister Mottley described the late Serrao as a giant in his own rights despite his small stature. She says Sir Philip along with the late Herbie Yearwood were important foundations of the Barbados Labour Party. Dean Serrao, the eldest of two of the late Sir Philip Serrao's sons says his father was a mentor and friend of many. He fondly remembers his father's love for sports and his time at the Carlton Club. He says his father was good at analysing people. Government-led initiative 'Scale Up Barbados' will soon hit the market. Minister of Energy and Business Development Senator Lisa Cummins says her Ministry is working on rolling out the plan, which is designed to take businesses from small local operations to international enfranchisements. Senator Cummins made the announcement while addressing the opening of the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries' First Council of Leaders meeting, this morning. Meanwhile, Senator Cummins is challenging the Coalition, which is the national umbrella body that brings together businesses in the services sector, to be relevant in order to be seen as a valuable entity. Government is closer to introducing legislation which establishes minimum standards for tourism and hospitality workers. Labour Minister Colin Jordan, provided the update as the Lower House resumed debate on a resolution for Parliament to take note of the Barbados Population Policy 2023. The move is one of the key tenets of the Labour Clauses Concessions Act, which could result in concessions being revoked if a business does not comply with the legislation. Mr. Jordan says Government is still exploring the possibility of rolling-out paid paternity leave. He is also making a case for provisions to be made in the workplace for breastfeeding mothers. The PhD Hoops basketball teams from the United States have taken a 4-2 series lead against Barbados clubs. Going into last night, the score was locked at two-all, but PHD Hoops won both games at the Barbados Community College Gym. Their juniors defeated We Kings 78-55 for their first win, while their seniors beat Pinelands 94-69 to stay undefeated. CBC's Damien Best reports on two earlier games in the series when NSC Combined Schools Tridents secured a victory over the PHD Hoops Junior team, but Fusionz Boutique Station Hill Cavaliers lost to the American's senior squad. An Anglican Cleric suggests a decline in religious observance is contributing to a weakening of the moral fabric, leading to increased crime and antisocial behaviour. Rector of the St. George Parish Church, Senator Reverend Canon Dr. John Rogers says society has changed, noting people no longer want to subscribe to the morals and values inscribed in them. While delivering the sermon during Sunday service he says citizens today have to be guided. Reverend Rogers reminded that crime didn't start yesterday, as he warned about making it a political issue, given what has played out in the past few weeks. A leading Barbadian academic sees a role for universities to play in solving current problems countries are facing. Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles says institutions are now being called upon to be activists in this 21st century. He says UWI recognises this and has been playing its part. Sir Hilary was at the time delivering a virtual address before a higher education sustainability initiative, Hesi Global Forum titled, 'The Future of Higher Education for Sustainable Development' at the UN in New York. Sir Hilary says the sustainable development goals, SDGs present opportunities for universities to return to their highest quality of service to humanity. Twenty-one young people have now graduated to being master of ceremonies after the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Youth MC Training Programme. Cohort 2 began on April 27 of this year and was over seen Captain Michael Jules and Jewel Forde saw the participants completing six modules and thirty contact hours. Speaking at the graduation was Minister of Sports, Youth and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith. In his speech he asked the participants not to just take in the training but now they have finished he hoped they would make it into a business. Minister Griffith also promised the participants to assist with any additional help if needed. Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir is dispelling rumours there's a glut of chicken on the island. In fact, he has called those stakeholders who are pushing this narrative to meet him at the negotiation table. Mr. Weir says no chicken was imported for the recently concluded ICC T-20 Men's Cricket World Cup. However, Mr. Weir says there were some whole chickens brought in over last year's Christmas period to supplement what was being produced, but wasn't completely sold out. He says he now has to meet with stakeholders to get an update on that matter.
