The Barbados Film and Television Association has a vision to see film clubs established in every secondary school on the island. This from BFTA President Jamal Slocombe. According to him, the success of this young filmmakers' initiative will provide a platform for meaningful dialogue from which film production in Barbados can thrive. Mr. Slocombe was addressing the BFTA's film forum at the Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre in Queen's Park. He says although they would be harnessing the talents from the secondary schools they are hoping to start at the Barbados Community College. Mr. Slocombe says they will also be looking to teach young filmmakers the element of business to give them the knowledge and support needed for them to succeed in their respective business ventures. Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kerrie Symmonds has pointed to Barbados' low birth rate and increasing death rate, as just some of the reasons why a mix of interventions, including cross-border movement, must be considered to respond to the situation. Noting that current projections suggest one in two Barbadians will be over the age of 60 by the year 2050, he says widening the tax base will benefit the island and its economy in the long run.
