The Department of Environment is taking proactive steps to alleviate the impact of soaring temperatures. Director of the Department, Amb. Diann Black Layne has revealed in an exclusive interview with ABS News that the Department will be selling air-conditioning units at 40 percent below market value. The first shipment of units is expected to arrive by March, serving as a trial run to gauge public demand. Ambassador Black Layne makes it clear however that the Department will not be seeking to disrupt the equilibrium of the market. She says, “We don't want to complete with the private sector, so will cap the number per homes so if you need an extra one you will have to go to the private sector and purchase it.”

Economist, Richard Peterkin has suggested to the government that it be very careful and avoid rushing to enact new legislation. Peterkin was reacting to the Prime Minister’s New Year address in which he announced plans to enact several new pieces of legislation this year.

Four more Barbadians are now homeless after the firebug struck at Lead Gap, Passage Road in St. Michael. Around five this evening their wooden house was destroyed by fire. The occupants, who were away from home, lost all of their possessions in the blaze. Neighbour Richard Legall was the first to notice the fire and sounded the alarm. Divisional Officer Marlon Small told CBC News getting access to the burning structure was a challenge. Two water tenders and ten officers under the Command of Divisional Officer Small responded to the blaze.

A call is being made for Government to look at the cost of insurance in Barbados. It comes against the backdrop of an imminent rise in the cost of motor insurance coverage that is not going down well with drivers. Some motorists say they are not comfortable with the news.
