A number of freight companies have stopped their ships traveling through the Red Sea after being targeted by Houthis - an Iran-backed rebel movement - in Yemen. The Red Sea is one the world's most important routes for oil and fuel shipments, as well as consumer goods. It is the route by which ships can reach the Suez Canal - itself a major shipping lane. Avoiding it means vessels must take much longer routes, for example navigating around southern Africa. Officials in Egypt have insisted that traffic is flowing normally through the Suez Canal, despite the recent attacks. And with a major military aid package stalled in US Congress there have been dire warnings about the country’s long-term ability to win the war against Russia. Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Vincent Nichols discusses reports that two women were killed after allegedly being shot by Israeli snipers inside a Catholic church in Gaza. "It's certainly a cold-blooded killing," the most senior Catholic figure in the UK said. An Israeli military sniper shot and killed two women inside the Holy Family Parish in Gaza City on Saturday, according to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The Israeli military has denied it targets civilians, with a spokesperson saying: "An initial review suggests that IDF troops, who were operating against Hamas terrorists in the area, operated against a threat that they identified in the area of the church. The IDF is conducting a thorough review of the incident." The chief executive of Sellafield has hit back at reports that computer systems at the nuclear site in Cumbria, England, have been hacked. Euan Hutton said there was no evidence of Sellafield's IT networks having been targeted by groups linked to foreign governments. He also rejected allegations of serious safety failings at the plant. Sellafield is widely regarded as Western Europe's most hazardous nuclear site. Its activities included generating electricity and reprocessing spent fuel. Now it is mainly used for the treatment and storage of nuclear waste. Pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai is facing a Hong Kong court in a long-awaited trial over charges that he "colluded with foreign forces". Mr Lai, 76, denies the charges. Jailed since December 2020, he faces life in prison if he is found guilty. Mr Lai was arrested under the National Security Law, which China has been accused of wielding to crush dissent. British teenager Alex Batty is expected to return to the UK, six years after he went missing with his mother and grandfather during a holiday. The 17-year-old was just 11 when he disappeared with mother Melanie Batty and grandfather David Batty on a family trip to Spain in September 2017. He is expected back home on Saturday 16 December 2023.

Mercedeh Shahinkar is 39. She was shot in the street in Iran as she stood next to her mother at a Woman Life Freedom protest last October. She was blinded in her right eye. Zaniyar Tondro was 17 when he was fired at 11 times by Iran’s military. He can see nothing out of his right eye either. Their bullets are still in his brain. Ali Delpasand is the father of nine-year-old Respina.
