Joe Biden has said he is “not surprised and outraged” at news of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny’s death. The US President said Navalny bravely stood up to violence by the Putin regime, for which he was jailed, and added that "Putin is responsible for Navalny's death”. The Russian prison service announced the death of Navalny, who has long been an outspoken critic of President Putin, and has been incarcerated since 2021 on charges widely viewed as politically motivated. Alexei Navalny was long the most prominent face of Russian opposition to President Vladimir Putin. The 47-year-old blogger had survived poisoning attempts and years in some of Russia's most notorious jails, after his group had exposed corruption at almost every level of the Russian state - frequently targeting President Putin himself. Even from behind bars, unable to challenge the president at the ballot box, his voice had retained power. But in February 2024, it fell silent. According to the prison service, he had gone for a walk when he lost consciousness and died. In the immediate aftermath, the Kremlin simply said that it was aware of his death, and the president had been informed. Across the world, however, there was shock and anger, as tributes were paid to a man who some said gave his life standing up to Russia's all-powerful leader. Yulia Navalnaya, wife of Alexei Navalny, has said she doesn't know whether the "horrible news" of her husband's death is true. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, she said the news of her husband's death so far only came from state sources. Navalny, who was Russia's most significant opposition leader for the past decade, has died in an Arctic Circle jail, the prison service has said. President Vladimir Putin's loudest critic, he was serving 19 years on extremism charges that were widely seen as politically motivated. Les Européens se sont mis d’accord sur de nouvelles règles de gouvernance économique. L’annonce est tombée samedi 10 février. Après une dernière négociation de près de 16 heures, les Etats membres et les députés européens ont finalement topé pour des règles budgétaires un peu plus flexibles qui ne brident pas les investissements. Un nouveau succès de la présidence belge. C’est comme ça que Vincent Van Peteghem, le ministre des finances qui était à la manœuvre pour négocier cet accord l’a présenté. Au final, les gouvernements disposeront d’un peu plus de temps pour ajuster leurs finances pour autant qu’ils engagent des réformes et qu’ils investissent dans des secteurs stratégiques : la défense, le numérique, la transition verte. Mais pas question de flamber pour autant. La discipline reste de vigueur. Les deux règles d’or de Maastricht restent gravées dans le marbre. Et les pays très endettés, comme la Belgique, se verront imposer des réductions automatiques de déficit et de la dette tous les ans. Une sorte de chemin à suivre très balisé. Trop ? Plusieurs voix s’élèvent déjà pour critiquer un accord d’un autre âge qui ne nous permettrait pas de faire face aux immenses défis d’investissement publics qui se présentent à nous.
