For the first time in 221 years, two broods of cicadas will soon emerge to invade backyards in 17 states, including here in Michigan. Some are even referring to the upcoming spring and summer invasion as "cicada-pocalypse." In just a few weeks, the broods of cicadas that emerge every 13 years and the brood that emerges every 17 years will come up from the ground at the same time.

Big changes are coming to self-checkout lanes at some major local retailers. Target, Walmart and Dollar General are putting new restrictions on self checkouts. In fact, Dollar General said it's eliminating self-checkout at 300 locations with the highest amount of theft. Target said that customers will now be limited to 10 items for self-checkout. With fewer transactions being eligible for self-checkouts, Target says it will open more traditional checkout lanes.

A colder shift in the weather this week with highs in the 30s and 40s, with more snow chances. Temperatures will be a bit milder today with highs climbing into the low to mid 40s. That's about right for this time of year. However, wind chills will be in the 20s and 30s. Light snow showers could be around early Wednesday, with accumulating snow possible Friday.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and colorectal cancer is on the rise in the U.S. In January, the American Cancer Society's "Cancer Facts and Figures" report for 2024 revealed a stark increase in case numbers among Americans under the age of 55. My brother, Kenny, was one of those cases. He died last year at the age of 54, just weeks after being diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. This is a cause close to my heart.

A historic Oakland County elementary school is now slated for demolition after an explosive school board meeting. On Monday night, Keego Harbor residents pleaded with the school district to save the 104-year-old Roosevelt Elementary School building, but the board voted to move forward with demolition.
