L'agglomération de Montréal abandonne la fluoration de l'eau potable à Dorval, L'Île-Dorval, Pointe-Claire, Beaconsfield, Kirkland et Baie d'Urfé, qui pratiquent la fluoration de l’eau depuis 70 ans. La santé publique montréalaise souhaitait pourtant étendre la fluoration à l’ensemble de l’île pour favoriser la santé buccodentaire. Pour justifier sa décision, l'agglomération de Montréal invoque les coûts anticipés de 1,16 M$ pour mettre à niveau les équipements de fluoration, des problèmes d'approvisionnement récurrent entraînant des arrêts de service, des problèmes de sécurité liés à la corrosivité des produits, des effets possibles sur la faune du Saint-Laurent en cas de généralisation de la fluoration, la volonté d’offrir une eau potable uniforme sur l’île, et une pétition citoyenne de plus de 1000 signatures demandant l’arrêt de la fluoration. L'agglomération de Montréal abandonnera la fluoration de l'eau potable dans six villes de l’ouest de l’île, au grand dam de certaines de celles-ci, mais aussi de la santé publique montréalaise qui souhaitait plutôt étendre la fluoration à l’ensemble de l’île pour favoriser la santé buccodentaire. La décision de cesser la fluoration de l’eau aux usines de Dorval et de Pointe-Claire a été votée lors du conseil d'agglomération du 21 novembre 2024 où la ville de Montréal détient 87% des voix. Ces deux usines, qui desservent environ 100 000 citoyens de Dorval, L'Île-Dorval, Pointe-Claire, Beaconsfield, Kirkland, Baie d'Urfé, pratiquent la fluoration de l’eau depuis 70 ans. La suspension de la taxe sur les produits et services (TPS) que le gouvernement du Canada propose enchante plusieurs consommateurs et commerçants. Or, pour certains, la mesure représentera par contre tout un défi logistique. Si elle est adoptée, cette mesure pourrait également être très coûteuse pour certaines provinces. Cinq provinces, soit celles de l’Atlantique et l’Ontario, perçoivent la TVH, qui combine les taxes du provincial et du fédéral sur les biens et services. A jury has found two men guilty on all charges related to human smuggling in a case where a family from India froze to death in 2022. The family of four had been trying to walk across a remote stretch of the Canada-U.S. border in Manitoba during a blizzard. The temperature that day was –23 C, but the wind chill made it feel as cold as –38.
