Hundreds of people gathered in New York on Monday to protest the arrest of Columbia University student and Pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil by agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (ICE) on Saturday. "Someone who had a green card, someone who has never done anything wrong, who has not committed any crime, at all, and they basically disappeared him," one protester said about the action from the Trump administration. The White House has not said Khalil is accused of or charged with a crime, but Trump wrote that his presence in the U.S. was "contrary to national and foreign policy interests." Since his arrest, Khalil has been moved to a federal jail for migrants in Louisiana to await deportation proceedings, according to a U.S. detainee database. Senior officials from Ukraine and the United States opened talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, focused on ending Russia’s war in Ukraine, just hours after Kyiv launched is largest drone attack on Moscow to date. There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian or U.S. officials on the massive attack. Some 343 drones targeted 10 Russian regions, leaving three people dead and 18 wounded, officials said. The meeting in Jeddah is the first between the U.S. and Ukraine since the explosive Oval Office meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy last month. Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested and taken into custody on Tuesday in Manila on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for the "war on drugs" that defined his term in office and which killed thousands of Filipinos. Duterte was served an Interpol arrest warrant on his arrival from Hong Kong at Manila's main airport and was in custody, the office of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said in a statement on Tuesday. Human rights groups claim that Philippine police and vigilantes under Duterte’s direction murdered unarmed drug suspects on a massive scale, allegations that authorities have denied. The ICC said it would pursue an investigation of suspected crimes against humanity. The arrest follows years of Duterte taunting the ICC since he unilaterally withdrew the Philippines from the court's founding treaty in 2019.
